Exeter Students Kick Off Year of Reading with Top Author

Year 8 students from West Exe School marked the start of the National Year of Reading 2026 with an inspiring live session from children’s author Tom Palmer.

During the event, students heard about Tom’s writing journey, gained insights into his storytelling process, and learned how to turn their own passions and interests into engaging stories. The session encouraged confidence, creativity, and a love of reading and writing among pupils.

Maynard student, Olivia Taylor, has become the only female to successfully gain a place on the Skyborne EASA Integrated ATPL training course to become a fully qualified airline pilot – a long held ambition for the Devon sixth former.

A group of Exeter College students recently returned from Honduras after working with conservation research organization Operation Wallacea.

A Level students travelled to Cusuco National Park in Honduras after their exams to work with scientists collecting vital data for use in their research on biodiversity and climate change.

Students gained hands-on experience of monitoring biodiversity within the rainforest, as well as a real life an insight into many of the topics they had studied at college.

Exeter College and Kier recently teamed up to deliver an intensive one week, pre-Apprenticeship work experience programme, designed to give local youngsters an insight into the construction industry and inspire them to pursue a career in the varied and vibrant sector.

Shweta Banerjee, the self-proclaimed “ambitious, determined and hardworking” 16-year old from Exeter, raised the GCSE bar this morning when she discovered that she was The Maynard’s top scoring student with eight of the highest possible Grade 9s and two Grade 8s.

Exeter School, the city's largest independent school, is celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results. Almost three-quarters of all grades - 73.65% - were grades 9-7, compared to the national average of 20.6%. Quadruple A* student is one of the highest scoring mathematicians in the country

Maynard School Sixth Former, Jessica Carr, not only achieved four straight A*s in her Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry A-levels and a further A* for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) but she also scored a flawless 100% in the incredibly testing Edexcel Maths paper 2, putting her as one of the country’s top A-level mathematicians.
