Young women gearing up to do "men's" work

Three female engineering students at Bicton College working towards Level 3 Extended Diplomas are headed for academic distinction, even outperforming some of their male peers.

Eighteen-year-old Emily Steer from Plymouth enrolled at the College after being told by people that she couldn’t do it. "The reactions I got surprised me and made me even more determined," says Emily. "And my Dad was really encouraging, which was the catalyst I needed to show everyone that I’m capable of developing a career in engineering."

Anna Sampson, 19, also from Devon, agrees: "I started out...

New Devon venture offers holiday breaks with a literary twist

The Reading Room Devon is running a series of one- and two-day courses that look into Devon's literary links. These reading retreats can also involve staying overnight at Greenbank, a farmhouse B&B overlooking Chagford on Dartmoor.

Set up by two English literature lecturers the reading holiday idea came about following a busy day in the classroom.

"We realised that what we loved about teaching was the endless sense of discovery," says Leah Varnell, one of the pair behind the project.

"It seemed to us that once people leave school, or perhaps university, the day...

Tailoring diabetes treatment to older patients yields dramatic results

More than a quarter of over 70s with type 2 diabetes could benefit simply from improving communication and education in the clinic, new research has revealed. A study led by the University of Exeter Medical School and published in the Lancet found that 27 per cent achieved better glycaemic control through individualised care alone.

At the moment, patients over the age of 70 are treated using a blanket method of aggressively reducing blood glucose levels, but that does little to take their complex needs into account.

Dr David Strain, from the University of Exeter Medical...
