Exeter Airport firefighters raise over £2,500 for Young Lives vs Cancer

Two firefighters from Exeter Airport have raised more than £2,500 for charity after successfully completing the gruelling 100km Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge in South Wales.

Chris Briggs and Iwan Jones, who serve with Exeter Airport Fire & Rescue Service, took on the two-day endurance event to support Young Lives vs Cancer, a charity that provides vital help to children, young people and their families facing cancer.

St Loye’s new headquarters is officially opened

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new headquarters of training charity St Loye’s Foundation was performed on Friday 14 June by the new Leader of Devon County Council, Councillor Bernard Hughes OBE.

The charity acquired its new Exeter city centre premises at Beaufort House on New North Road in January, enabling it to relocate its administrative and training headquarters from its previous, rented accommodation across the road at Brittany House.

Special event for WESC Foundation volunteers

Over 30 volunteers from across Devon gathered in Exeter at WESC Foundation’s premises on Topsham Road to take part in a special event to celebrate National Volunteers Week.

WESC Foundation offers learning, care and therapy for more than 100 children and young people with sight loss and complex needs and the charity hosted a special afternoon tea to thank its dedicated volunteers.

Charity Quiz to benefit two local charities

Local law firm, Gilbert Stephens LLP, is hosting a charity quiz on Thursday 18 July at Kennaway House, Sidmouth, to raise funds for two local charities – Sidmouth Voluntary Services and FORCE Cancer Charity.

The event, organised by the law firm for the second year running, starts at 7pm and hopes to attract over 60 people and raise hundreds of pounds on the night.

Held in Kennaway House’s Cellar Bar, light refreshments will be included in the £25.00 team entry fee and the organisers are calling upon local people to get behind the fundraising event.

Golf enthusiasts called for annual Hospiscare event

Golf enthusiasts will be taking to the green in July to play in one of Devon’s premier golf tournaments while raising money for Hospiscare.

More than 200 people have already signed up to take part in the Hospiscare Golf Day, being held on Thursday, July 11, where they will have the chance to take home the Marnie Burgoyne Memorial Trophy.

Now in its ninth year, the much-loved amateur tournament has raised approximately £80,000 and the event’s organisers are hoping that this amount will rise to £100,000 when they celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2014.

Exeter Enterprise Rotary raise £1,500+ for Royal Marines Hasler Company

So far over £1,500 has been raised from a charity golf day at Exeter Golf and Country Club on Thursday 13 June. This was the fifth annual golf day, organised by Exeter Enterprise Rotary which involved 25 teams of 4 from all over the UK.

The day was to raise funds and awareness of the Royal Marines Charitable Trust and their work in supporting injured and wounded Royal Marines.

On a rather dismal Friday afternoon in the city, there was a little ray of light which stopped the ladies of Exeter becoming too down-hearted at the lack of summer sunshine. Tucked away in a corner of the Exeter Phoenix was the Clothes Swap Soiree, which was an event where local ladies could exchange their unwanted clothes for some new ones without any hefty price tags to do so, and in the process you would be contributing towards the charity SAFE, who are working towards stopping domestic violence and abuse.

Women in Exeter are being urged to grab their last chance to enter Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life at Westpoint Arena, as there are just two weeks left until registration closes. United Truckers and bibic children visit Devon’s Crealy

On Saturday 8 June, United Truckers organised a convoy of 39 cabs to take children from the Somerset-based charity bibic to visit Devon’s Crealy Great Adventure Park. Each child and their carer travelled in these monster cabs from Bridgwater, arriving at Devon’s Crealy to enjoy a fun day out for free.

Firefighters roll up their sleeves for charity

Firefighters are preparing to roll up their sleeves to take part in a charity car wash on Saturday 15 June, raising vital funds for The Fire Fighters Charity.

The event will be held at Station 60 Special Operations, which is part of the Service Headquarters site at Clyst St George, from 9am – 1pm.

There will also be a Fireman Sam shop, selling merchandise from the popular children’s television show.
