Traffic signals to be replaced at busy Exeter junction

Temporary traffic signals will be in place at a junction in Exeter from Wednesday 29 August while work is carried out to upgrade the lights.

Preparatory work is already underway at the junction of Heavitree Road/Polsloe Road/Barrack Road and Magdalen Road/Barrack Road, where the traffic lights have reached the end of their serviceable life.

The signals, poles and electrics will all be replaced, and cable ducting will also be repaired.

As much of the scheme as possible will be carried out using the existing traffic signals but the temporary lights will be used when the main signals are replaced.

The temporary units will be located in areas to maintain access at the crossing points and provide access around the junctions where possible. As with the permanent lights, any signalled crossing points will have rotating cones for blind pedestrians.

The new traffic signals will use about 70% less energy than the current system.

The scheme is scheduled to be completed by Friday 21 September.
