Spacex, Exeter’s contemporary visual arts organisation, has successfully raised £10,000 to support its new artists residency programme.

Hundreds of people have donated money to the campaign, and in return will receive artworks, posters and publications.

Mark Waugh Chair of Spacex said: "We are thrilled by the enormous response to our crowdfunding campaign, which shows that the public wants to support the dynamic evolution of Spacex as it explores new ways to fund original and challenging visual arts in Exeter.

"We are also indebted to the great generosity if the artists who have gifted their art for the campaign. It is tough times for the arts and we are pleased to continue to support artists through this project and enable access to contemporary art.

"The residency programme will offer two artists the opportunity to stay and work in Exeter for a six week period as well as the chance to connect with people and partners across the city."

Kathy Norris, Project Manager commented: "The really positive thing about raising money in this way is that we now have a community of supporters who’ve all invested in the residencies. We are planning to keep them informed and invite them along to events

"The first residency is an open call and is now open for applications. Spacex is inviting proposals from artists whose practice involves collaboration. The residency could involve collaboration with Exeter-based artists, with young people, or with local arts or non-arts organisations.

"This residency has been developed with key institutions in the city including Exeter College and The University of Exeter. Over 200 children and young people from Exeter College, University of Exeter and Ladysmith Primary School will be involved in projects inspired by the artists work.
