Following the success of last year’s event, Princesshay is hosting its second Sustainable Travel Day on Wednesday 14th June to raise awareness of its continued commitment to sustainable travel and other environmental initiatives.

The event is timed to take place during National Bike Week and Love to Ride.

The day will bring together partners from across the city to encourage and inspire people working in and visiting Princesshay to think about how they travel and try to use more sustainable transport more often. The event will take place on Bedford Street from 10am – 4pm.

Local groups and organisations that are promoting sustainable travel and related services to shoppers within the Princesshay include Ride On – Cycling for all, Exeter City Futures, Co-Bikes and Devon County Council Travel Team.

Ride On – Cycling for all will be offering free bikes checks for the public and promoting their services, which include taking old unwanted bikes and repurposing them.

As part of its goal to increase the well-being of Exeter’s citizens through energy independence and zero congestion Exeter City Futures is launching its Tranquil City Exeter project.

The project is being undertaken in partnership with Tranquil City, a grassroots initiative based in London that challenges the idea that cities have to be busy, noisy and polluted. Using images tagged to #TranquilCityExeter from Instagram Exeter City Futures will create a map of tranquil spaces in Exeter.

The aim is to encourage low-impact mobility such as walking and cycling, celebrating nature's presence in the city and also highlighting the benefits of periods of respite for our mental well-being.

Exeter City Futures will also be promoting a Community Partnership Project they are working on with University of Exeter and Exeter City Council, which aims to work with communities across Exeter to reduce energy and congestion and consider how to make the surrounding region sustainable for the future.

Princesshay will be giving away free bike saddle covers – so cyclists can return to a dry saddle no matter what the weather brings.

The sustainability day initiative will see staff working throughout Princesshay travel to work sustainably, whether it be by scooter, bike, roller-skates or on foot. The first 50 Princesshay employees that sign up and travel to work sustainably on Wednesday 14th June will be treated to a free breakfast roll and hot drink at Giraffe World Kitchen.

Wayne Pearce, Princesshay Centre Director said: “Exeter has some fantastic sustainable travel organisations and it’s great to see a number of these getting involved with the Princesshay sustainability day to promote their range of services within the city”.
