A task force of litter pickers from three Devon-based Hall & Woodhouse managed public houses swept across the region this month (June) to help tidy up bustling streets, hedgerows and green spaces as part of the brewery’s annual community litter pick event, Founder’s Sweepers.

Established 10 years ago, the Founder’s Sweepers litter campaign, in association with Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean initiative, was introduced by Hall & Woodhouse to celebrate the day the company was founded in 1777 and is supported by all of its 52 managed public houses across the south.

Teams from Cranberry Farm in Exeter and The Lighter Inn in Topsham as well as Ness House in Shaldon, Teignmouth, headed onto the streets and covered up to a mile in distance to collect litter in their local areas with the aim to improve the environment for residents and wildlife.

Giving up a total of six hours of their time, almost 20 bags of litter were collected by each of the Devon-based managed public houses adding to the 5,000 total which has been gathered and disposed of since the Founder’s Sweepers campaign began.

A spokesperson from Hall & Woodhouse, says: “Working to support our local communities is something we are incredibly passionate about, and keeping them clean and safe is so important.

“As a thriving hub in a local community, our public houses take part in this campaign as a team so they can really make a difference in the neighbourhoods in which they work.  Litter not only spoils how our beautiful landscapes look, it also creates toxins and pollutants that are harmful to the land, wildlife and livestock.”

He adds: “Our teams really did their best with the 2018 big clean-up, and after all the hard work we provided them all with a bottle of Badger beer and Founders’ Day celebration cake.”
