A377 in Crediton to be closed for a month

The A377 between Queen Elizabeth Drive and Higher Road Crediton is to be closed for foutr weks in order to stabilise the carriageway edge and resurface a cracked section of road.

The scheme is due to commence on 15 January 2018 and will continue for approximately a month (weather dependent). The road will be closed 24hrs a day but could be re-opened sooner subject to favourable conditions.

What are we doing?

Excavating some 3m deep adjacent to the carriageway.
Casting of a new mass concrete retaining wall to stabilise the road.
Replacing existing highway drainage.
Resurfacing the road along the extent of the works (approx. 30m length).
Why do we have to close the road?
Whilst undertaking this work, we must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public at all times.

Due to constraints on working area and in line with our safety guidelines, we are unable to carry out this work without a road closure.

Why is there such a long diversion route?

We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar or higher classification of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely navigate the diversion route.

In order to assist in notifying road users in advance of reaching the closure, we will also be erecting electronic message boards at the following locations in addition to the standard diversion signage:

North Tawton Junction.
De Bathe Cross.
Cowley Bridge.
Why are we doing the work now?
The work is being carried out in January so as to stabilise the road prior to any further cracking/slippage.
