SWH Group’s National Skills Academy for Construction (NSAfC) has just received accreditation from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for a further three years.

The company’s academy, based in Exeter, has so far reached more than 4,500 young people to promote construction related careers.

SWH Group first achieved NSAfC status in 2013 and has since undertaken a wide range of activities to promote a career in construction to young people in schools and the local community. SWH Training, part of SWH Group, also offers a range of apprenticeship programs as well as other training courses related to construction, highways maintenance and civil engineering. Supported by more than 50 employees across the business, just some of the events organised and delivered by SWH Group include:

  • Arranging tours of live sites for school children
  • Careers talks and assemblies
  • Organising work experience placements
  • Work preparation days, including CV writing workshops, letter writing and mock interviews
  • Supporting schools with construction focussed activities, such as helping students at Great Torrington School design an environmentally friendly school
  • Taster days for those with identified special needs

These events are driven by the company’s Project Skills Coordinator, Anna Cooper, who says: “SWH Group prides itself on being a local company which is very much a part of the communities it serves. We want to train and employ a workforce drawn from the region and invest in home grown talent. Achieving NSAfC status for a further three years gives us the opportunity to build on the many successes we have already achieved and we look forward to showing even more young people just how rewarding a career in construction can be.”

Gary Hewison, Regional National Performance Coordinator at the CITB said: “SWH Group is a prime example of how important organisations are to our work in promoting the construction industry to future generations. They have achieved tangible successes through their extensive program of events and we look forward to working with them even more closely in the future.”

SWH Group has offices in Devon and Dorset and plans to extend its reach in 2016 by working with even more schools, colleges, youth groups and universities throughout the south west.
