Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Exeter council invests in a brighter future

Fourteen families have moved into new ecologically friendly, high tech homes built by Exeter City Council as part of a project to make the most of underused spaces in the city and create affordable housing for local people.

Silverberry Close and Barberry Close provide a total of 14 new three-bedroom properties, including two fully wheelchair accessible homes.

Ottery play area takes a step closer to completion

Improvements at the Land of Canaan play area in Ottery St Mary have taken a step closer to completion as local children have chosen their favourite design.

Although the winning design has not yet been approved by Ottery St Mary Town Council and is still to be deliberated by East Devon District Council, who release the funding, local children have had their say about what they want.

A survey into a new benefit due to be introduced in Exeter has produced some alarming results.

Universal Credit, which will replace many existing benefits, is being gradually rolled out across the country and will begin to be implemented in Exeter in November.

But research by the Advice Exeter partnership has raised grave concerns about how claimants will be affected, with few aware of the changes and advice agencies worryingly unprepared.

To celebrate the launch of Princesshay’s Grand Dine Out competition to win £1,000, visitors to the centre are invited to a summer garden party on Friday 31st July in Princesshay Square from 11am – 2pm.

Exeter City Football Club have once again celebrated diversity in the local community by holding a football tournament that attracted players from across the globe, yesterday (Sunday 26 July). Torquay based Crispy Pigs beat Not a Kalou from Ipplepen 2-1 in a closely fought final. Ashley Dewdney scored both goals for the winners as they came from behind to edge victory. Pensioner killed in Exeter lorry crash

A pedestrian has died following a collision with a lorry in Exeter on Saturday.

Police, fire and ambulance were called just prior to 1pm on Saturday 25th July to attend Fore Street, Exeter after reports of a collision between a lorry and a pedestrian.

A 78-year old man from the Exeter area was confirmed deceased on arrival at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

A formal identification has yet to be carried out.

Fore Street was closed for around six hours as specialist forensic investigation of the scene took place.

Devon pair make Bus Driver of the Year final

Two drivers from Stagecoach South West are competing to become the 2015 Bus Driver of the Year.

The pair were victorious in the local heats of the competition and will now go on to compete at the national finals held in Blackpool during September.

Exeter-based Richard Smith bagged first place in the South West heats, alongside a £200 prize, after scoring 96 out of 100 in his theory test alone. Joining Richard in Blackpool is Robert Groger, from Torquay who came second in the selection round taking home a prize of £150.
