Two-try hero Thomas Waldrom insists Exeter Chiefs always believed they could beat Clermont Auvergne despite going 14-3 down inside 20 minutes.

It secured the bonus point for Rob Baxter’s side and puts them top of pool two after three games, ahead of next weekend’s vital return fixture in Clermont.

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter was full of praise for his side as they made it back-to-back victories in this season’s European Champions Cup with a 31-14 victory at home to ASM Clermont Auvergne.

Despite trailing 14-10 at the break to last season’s beaten finalists, the Chiefs produced a stunning second half showing that yielded not only 21 unanswered points, but also saw them claim the all-important four-try bonus point.

Early on, however, it was the Top 14 leaders who used the elements to put themselves in charge as they claimed converted tries through Hosea Gear...

One of the heavyweights of world rugby, Clermont currently lead the Top 14 standings and were beaten finalists in last season’s European Champions Cup after losing to Toulon.

Exeter head into the clash with Franck Azéma’s glittering squad knowing that defeat at Sandy Park without so much as a bonus point would leave their European campaign in dire straits.

But Chudley, whose form at scrum-half has been an integral part...

Chiefs side to face Clermont

Rob Baxter insists he and his squad need no reminding of the importance of tomorrow’s European Champions Cup encounter with visiting ASM Clermont Auvergne at Sandy Park (5:15pm). Having kicked off their return to Europe’s top tier with defeat to the Ospreys, the Devon club rediscovered their winning formula by securing a bonus point victory at home to Bordeaux-Begles. That success means as they prepare to hit the halfway stage of the competition, they lie second in Pool 5 behind the Welsh region who themselves came unstuck to Clermont at the Stade Marcel Michelin last time out. But whereas...
