Government announce safeguard for privatised Green Investment Bank based on Regen SW constitution

The government has announced it will protect the ‘green purpose’ of the Green Investment Bank after privatisation, using an approach modelled on Regen SW’s constitution. A ‘special share’ in the bank will be held by a separate company independent of both the bank and the government.

The bank would not be able to make changes to its green mission unless this ‘Special Shareholder’ gives its consent. Devon county councillors are calling on the region’s MPs to rebel against the Government if the local government settlement is again inadequate to provide front line services and support for vulnerable people. A University of Exeter psychologist has been given three prestigious prizes for his work to further understanding of how the human mind regulates behaviour.

Frederick Verbruggen won the awards because of his significant contribution to the study of ‘executive control’ over the past decade.

This is a set of regulatory processes that aim to override unwanted, strong impulses or urges, allowing people to resist short-term temptations and fulfil long-term goals.

Motorists are being warned to take care on Devon's roads today after heavy rain left standing water in many areas.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Devon this weekend.

The first bricks in Exeter Cathedral’s Big LEGO® Build will be laid next week at a special ceremony to launch the project.

The Bishop of Exeter Robert Atwell will be joined by the winners of a Devon-wide schools’ competition to get the epic LEGO build underway, just in time for half term.

Rogue traders who targeted elderly jailed

Three men found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the vulnerable and elderly for shoddy and unnecessary home repair work, were sentenced today at Exeter Crown Court in a case brought by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service.

Thomas Maughan, 27, and Thomas Mahon, 46, were each sent to prison for 12 months for their part in the fraud.

Both had pleaded not guilty but were convicted after an eight day trial.
