WARNING as strong winds and heavy rain set to batter Devon

Police are advising people to take extra care on Monday 8 February after the Met Office issued an amber weather warning of very strong winds.

Heavy rain and strong winds with gusts of between 60 and 70 mph are likely from 3am on Monday morning.

As a result, traffic disruption is expected due to fallen trees and flooded roads.

Motorists are asked to drive carefully, allow extra time for their journeys and avoid all flooded areas.

Exeter Chiefs saw their 13-month long unbeaten home record fall by the wayside as defending Aviva Premiership champions Saracens came back from 11-0 down to record victory at a packed Sandy Park.

Four Chiefs youngsters pen new deals

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has spoken of his delight after four of the club’s highly-rated youngsters today put pen to paper on new deals.

Talented back Max Bodilly has been rewarded for some sparkling form with a new two-year contract extension, whilst Stu Townsend and Ed Holmes have also agreed new two-year deals from the start of next season.

Completing the list is young fly-half Joe Simmonds, younger brother of current Chief, Sam Simmonds, who has signed his professional contract, signing on for the next three years.

Exeter Chiefs star Jack Nowell described England’s RBS Six Nations victory over Scotland as “massive” and hopes Eddie Jones’ side can now kick on in the competition.

In a hard fought encounter, Cornishman Nowell claimed his eighth international try as he followed up an earlier score from George Kruis to help England to a 15-9 success. Centre Owen Farrell kicked the remainder of the visiting points with Gloucester scrum-half Greig Laidlaw slotting three penalties for the Scots.

Community fund available to Exeter groups

RGB Building Supplies is giving charities, groups and schools in the Exeter area one final chance to receive £1,000 worth of building materials before its Well Built Community Fund is relaunched again in April with a new look.

Over the past two years the builders merchant has donated £10,000 worth of products to a wide range of different organisations in the region as part of the Community Fund. Now they are inviting groups that need help to complete an outdoor project to come forward and explain how £1,000 worth of materials will help.

High winds and heavy rain batter Devon

Motorists are being warned to take care on Devon’s roads today as heavy rain and gale force winds batter the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds, and upgraded their heavy rain warning from yellow to amber, valid until 6pm today.

Flooding has been reported across the region, along with fallen trees. Police are advising drivers to take extra care on the roads due to surface water and reduced visibility.

Devon County Council has been cited as an authority of good practice by the Fostering Network for its positive work with children in its care.

The Fostering Network this week launched a new report highlighting the importance of maintaining relationships between fostered children and their former foster parents.

Stagecoach South West has announced that, due to popular demand, it is extending its sale on tickets for the luxury Stagecoach Gold route 57 until the end of February.

The sale started on 3rd January 2016, with a number of fares slashed, offering discounts of up to 38% on single, return and weekly tickets.
