Exeter based financial planning firm Paradigm Norton has been honoured with the UK’s most coveted business award. Paradigm Norton is one of only 185 organisations nationally to be recognised with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in 2026, with just 36 receiving an award for sustainable development.

Since it was co-founded in England by Paul Thompson in 2002, Water Babies has grown into the world’s largest baby and toddler swim school with its head office based in Honiton, Devon. Today Water Babies teaches more than 47,000 babies every week through a network of family businesses across the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, China, New Zealand and Canada, and will soon be opening in Germany.

Powderkeg Brewery wins major award

Powderkeg Brewery, based in Woodbury Salterton near Exeter, has gone straight to the top with its first award, having won Best Lager at The Beer Awards for its pilsner ‘Cut Loose’.

The Beer Awards are run by the world-renowned IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition), with the beers judged in a blind tasting by leading figures from the international beer industry. Winning ‘Best in Show’ in its category, Cut Loose was described as ‘one of the 16 best beers in the world’. The last of the cordons have been removed today (Tuesday) from Exeter High Street following the major fire at at the Royal Clarence Hotel.

A number of businesses remain closed due to damage caused by the fire.

Police announce knife amnesty

Devon and Cornwall Police is holding a knife amnesty this month to give people the opportunity to safely hand in potentially dangerous weapons. The amnesty will run from Tuesday 15 until Monday 21 November 2016. This initiative has been prompted by the recent legislation that now prohibits the sale or importation of ‘zombie knives’.

Police want to give people the opportunity to hand these shocking weapons in, along with any other unwanted knives, to take them out of circulation, avoiding them ending up in the wrong hands.

Lasting symbol of Remembrance carved for Exeter Cathedral

A new carving of a poppy has been completed at Exeter Cathedral in time for Remembrance Sunday. The decorated “corbel” stone will eventually be added high up on the eastern end of the Cathedral as part of a major programme of works in that area of the building that was funded by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. It was carved from a block of Salcombe stone by Gary Morley who has been a member of the Cathedral’s team of masons for over 25 years. Two new Habitat Mitigation Officers have been appointed to give information, advice and guidance to the public across the Exe Estuary, Dawlish Warren and East Devon Pebblebed Heaths. Devon County Council has asked the Government to reconsider its position regarding increased business rates on rooftop solar installations.

The Government is proposing that from next April many local authorities and businesses in the UK will see major tax or business rate increases on rooftop solar installations.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a collision in Torquay which left a man critically injured.

Emergency services were called just before 2.30pm on Friday 4 November 2016 following the collision between a black Vauxall Agila, a grey Citroen Berlingo and a multi-coloured Mercedes skip lorry on Beechfield Avenue, Torquay.
