City law firm supports art initiative

A NEW initiative, which features artwork created by people living with dementia, has received support from legal firm Cartridges Law.

The company will be displaying work from local creative workshop Budding Friends in the foyer of its Cowick Street offices, in support of Age UK Exeter and dementia care in the local community.

The exhibition was launched at a private viewing with some of the artists, their family and friends, as well as the firm’s private client and reception teams. Everyone is invited to drop in and see the colourful displays.

Over 50 members of staff from Devon law firm Wollen Michelmore have been recognised with long service awards at the annual Christmas party held in Torquay.

Business confidence has increased in the South West but economic uncertainty remains the biggest threat to firms, according to the latest Business in Britain report from Lloyds Bank. The report’s confidence index - an average of respondents’ expected sales, orders and profits over the next six months – increased to 17 per cent, up from four per cent, the survey’s score in September 2016. Three outstanding academics at the University of Exeter have been recognised with prestigious awards in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list.

The University’s Provost, Professor Janice Kay, has been awarded a CBE for services to higher education. Professor Mike Depledge of the University of Exeter Medical School has been awarded a CBE for services to environment and human health after he set up a pioneering research centre in the field. Jewellery stolen in Mid Devon burglary

Police are appealing for witnesses following a burglary near Tiverton.

A property in Withleigh was broken into between 2-5pm on Tuesday the 27th December.

A number of distinctive 22-carat items of jewellery were stolen including bangles, necklaces and rings, as well as the Kashmir style wooden box that they were being stored in.

Police would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and noted anything suspicious, or who has been offered any of these items for sale.

Chiefs side to face Bath

Body pulled from water at Exeter Quay

Police were called just before 12.50pm yesterday (Wednesday 28 December 2016) after reports of a body of a man being found in the canal on The Quay, Exeter.

The body is male, thought to be in his 60s but he has not yet been formally identified.

Enquiries are underway to identify the man.

Police are not treating this death as suspicious.

A police cordon was set up yesterday whilst the body was recovered, assisted by the police dive team.
