Protecting your business against flooding

As we are all unfortunately very aware, Exeter is a high-risk area for flooding. As far back as 2012, the city was named the 15th most at risk location by the Association of British Insurers, and since then each winter has brought more scenes of devastation. A £32m flood-defence scheme was begun in 2014 and went into its second phase last summer. Work has now stopped until October to avoid disruption to summer visitors, but the government still hopes to have the scheme completed in 2018.

In the meantime, however, Exeter's businesses still face the prospect of flooded premises,...

Young people warned over social media scams

Young people are falling foul of scams which target them through their social media accounts, The Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service has warned.

Many young people have been conned into providing personal data or into responding to modelling and talent scams via pop-ups on social media accounts like Instagram and Facebook.

Internet-savvy 18-24 year-olds don’t consider themselves as the group most likely to be duped - and that makes them more vulnerable.

The Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service is combating the online menace with...

Exeter City to release new third kit for 2017/18 season

Exeter City will proudly wear the current home and away shirts for the 2017/18 season, with a new third kit to be added.

This season’s third kit will be heavily influenced by City’s partnership with main club sponsor Flybe, which is one of the longest running sponsorships in football.

The new kit will replace the Fluminese-inspired third kit which had been used for the last two seasons, most recently in City’s 4-1 win away at Newport County on New Year’s Eve.

The traditional red and white striped home shirt, with black and white collar and trim will remain City’s...

Exeter Northcott Theatre is appealing for knitters to help prepare for its Christmas pantomime.

As a thank you for the support the Northcott hopes to receive through the appeal, it has teamed up with Home-Start Exeter and Devon & Cornwall Housing Association to offer 500 free pantomime tickets to families who may not be in a financial position to come to the theatre this Christmas...

The completion of flood defence works in Teignmouth has been delayed until September after additional essential repair work was identified to tackle erosion under the sea wall.

Teignbridge has needed to reschedule the end date of the vital works to deal with voids found underneath the structure and ensure its ongoing integrity.

As well as being a popular place to walk, the sea wall – built in the 1930s - provides vital coastal flood protection for up to 400 homes and businesses in Teignmouth and protects Shaldon from the impact of wave action. It has withstood the elements...

Investing in buy-to-let property

In this modern era of faltering pension funds, low interest rates and poorly performing government bonds, it can be difficult to know where to turn for a sound investment proposition. There is, however, one area that has been consistently buoyant and has out performed other investment types: the good old-fashioned concept of investing in bricks and mortar.

The buy-to-let market has proved hugely popular with those looking for a safe investment that will generate positive yields. Let’s examine why, and see if you too should consider becoming a landlord.

The perfect storm...

The RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) is calling on construction firms in the South West to help tackle the skills shortage in the industry by helping some of their community’s most vulnerable people get back into work.

It has been predicted that the UK construction industry will create around 190,000 new jobs by the end of 2018 but there is a growing fear that there will not be the talent to fill them.* In fact, recent RICS research revealed that the UK construction industry could lose almost 200,000 EU workers post-Brexit, should Britain lose access to the single...
