SW small business eye share of nation’s £5bn Christmas Spend

Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

In wider positive economic signs, new data from the Small Business Saturday campaign also found Brits could spend over £23 billion in total across the UK this festive season, representing a nominal 16% year-on-year spending rise.

Next phase for on-schedule Stadium redevelopment

The £3.4 million stadium redevelopment at St James Park, the home of Exeter City FC, is entering the next phase in the programme of works. The Old Stagecoach stand, which dated back to 1927, has been demolished and a new stand is being built in its place, along with other improvements, including the ground’s away end. The most recent activity has been the piling operation, which saw 160 piles sunk to an average depth of 12 metres to provide the foundations for the new Grandstand. Although Exeter’s Anglo-Welsh Cup hopes remain in the balance, Chiefs skills coach Ricky Pellow insists his side will be going ‘all-out’ for victory when they play host to Saracens at Sandy Park tomorrow (3pm).

Last weekend’s 31-21 defeat at Worcester Warriors saw the Devonians surrender top spot in their pool to Harlequins, who tonight travel to Northampton Saints knowing they need just a point to advance into the last four at the expense of the Chiefs.

A377 stabilisation scheme on schedule

Work is progressing well on a major stabilisation scheme on the A377 at Chapel Downs in Crediton.

Essential repairs and reconstruction work started earlier this month on a 30 metre stretch, between Queen Elizabeth Drive and Higher Road, where the edge of the road is cracking due to an unstable embankment. The scheme is on schedule to be completed by 12 February.

Highway drainage is being replaced and a retaining wall is being constructed. The road will also be resurfaced.

Multi-talented Exeter Chiefs stars proved fundraising was a piece of cake when they baked for a charity coffee morning.

More than 150 people tucked into creations including a Guinness gateau and chocolate brownies provided by members of the club’s Cookie Club – a group of players who meet weekly to show off their prowess in the kitchen.

The event, part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, took place at Exeter’s historic Guildhall and was hosted by Chiefs legend Gareth Steenson and his wife Karen

New paper cup recycling scheme launched in Teignbridge

Teignbridge District Council, in partnership with the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK), is launching a new recycling service for plastic-lined paper cups.

As of this month people can recycle their used cups alongside food and drink cartons at specialist recycling banks across the district.
