Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

In wider positive economic signs, new data from the Small Business Saturday campaign also found Brits could spend over £23 billion in total across the UK this festive season, representing a nominal 16% year-on-year spending rise.

A collection of unusual antique fans assembled over many years is to be sold at Chilcott Auctioneers’ next sale.

The fans belonged to Jane Campbell-Allan, originally from Stirlingshire but who lived in Devon for most of her life until her death in 2017.

Jane was known as an eccentric lady with a wicked sense of humour who enjoyed collecting antiques, especially jewellery. But it was fans that caught her imagination. Her interest is believed to have started after an elderly aunt gave her an antique fan when she was young.

On 19 September 2018, Lympstone Manor will be hosting its inaugural Protégé Dinner event to celebrate the talented chefs who have trained under celebrated British chef Michael Caines during their formative years.

Each of the eight hand-selected protégés will be joining Michael from across the UK and Ireland to create a collaborative eight-course tasting menu in his Michelin-starred kitchen.

Mark Thompson, who works at the Marsh Barton restaurant in Exeter, has recently celebrated 35 years with the company.

Mark began working at McDonald’s in 1983 as a Crew Member in the Friar Street restaurant in Reading and has since spent much of his career as a Shift Manager; running restaurants’ breakfast, day and night shifts. City-bound side of Bridge Road closed overnight tonight

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed in one direction overnight tonight (Monday 20 August).

The city bound road closure will take place from 8pm tonight until 6am tomorrow morning (Tuesday 21 August) when the road will re-open.

Almost £200,000 available for East Devon projects

Almost £200,000 is now available for East Devon community projects through the Communities Together Fund and voluntary and community groups, town and parish councils, community interest companies and registered charities can now apply for funding from this grant pot.

The fund money has been given by East Devon District and Devon County Councils. For every elector in the district, East Devon has put 10p into the grant pot and Devon County Council put forward £1.
