Private Bill Herd was a 25-year-old father-of- two from Exeter when he left his job as a Carter to join the Devonshire Regiment in 1914. He was killed in action four years later at Bapaume, France.

Bill was one of 11,500 Devon men and women who died in the First World War and will be remembered as part of an extraordinary ‘people’s tribute’ staged at the Devon County Show on May 18, 19 and 20 at Westpoint, Exeter.

Six months ago the Show appealed to local people to make a poppy in memory of those who had lost their lives and was stunned to receive just under 31,000 poppies...

Newton Abbot Racecourse announces £1m prize money commitment for 2017

Following the Easter Saturday season fixture, Newton Abbot Racecourse has confirmed another record year of committed prize money for 2017.

Over the course of the 2017 season, over £1million in prize money will be spread across the 18 fixtures which will take place between April and October.

This year, the minimum amount of prize money on offer will be: £6,000 for all Class 5 hurdles, £6,750 for all Class 5 chases, £7,250 for all Class 4 hurdles and £7,500 for all Class 4 chases.

The early May Bank Holiday weekend saw Exeter’s Northernhay Gardens and Castle Courtyard transformed into a foodie’s paradise as the 14th Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink sprang up.

Crowds gathered to see hundreds of local producers, top chefs including Tom Kerridge, Michael Caines MBE, Simon Hulstone, Michael Wignall, Paul Ainsworth, Josh Eggleton and Mark Dodson, family activities, masterclasses and freshly cooked locally-sourced street food.

Exeter City will meet Carlisle United in the League Two play-off semi-finals after the Cumbrians battled back from 2-1 down at half-time to claim all three points at St James Park.
