Exeter awaits era-defining tournament as new Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy unveiled and further tickets released

With just 100 days to go until Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 kicks off in Sunderland, World Rugby has today unveiled a bold new trophy – a symbol of the game’s unstoppable global rise – and announced the release of additional tickets for what promises to be a generational moment for the sport.

The trophy will embark on a trip to Exeter on 20 May at Exeter Cathedral, as part of a nationwide tour of England.

Sarah Massey, Managing Director of the Rugby World Cup 2025, and several rugby stars will be in attendance to showcase the new trophy.

Play tennis for free in Exeter

It’s Wimbledon fortnight and Exeter City Council is encouraging people to dig out their tennis rackets and get down to one of the 13 free-to-use courts across the city.

They’re located at Heavitree Pleasure Ground, King George V Playing Fields and beside Matthews Hall in Topsham. Three courts at Cowick Barton Playing Fields are currently being re-surfaced and will be ready to use in the coming weeks.

Organisers of this weekend’s Bicton Arena Horse Trials are working around the clock to ensure the best going possible for its affiliated competition in light of the long spell of dry weather.

Showjumping, including the warm up area, will take place on all-weather surfaces, the dressage arenas have been watered and the cross country courses have been aggravated with sand on takes offs and landings where appropriate.

The region’s largest youth sports event is set for Dawlish next weekend with 100os expected to descend on the town for a day of sport, activities, food, entertainment and one or two well-known names. Former Exeter Chiefs star Matt Jess and GB cycling international Lauren Dolan have joined the South West Rotary Youth Games as official ambassadors. The Cornwall-raised Jess spent nine seasons with the Chiefs, a period that included promotion to the Premiership, an Anglo-Welsh Cup Triumph and 2017’s famous Premiership title victory. Newton Abbot-based 18 year old Dolan has represented GB at the European Youth Olympics and World Championships – in the latter she bravely completed the time trial event despite a serious crash. A group of intrepid Aussie cricketers are due to set foot in Devon ready for a second gritty Ashes series against the bustling might Broadclyst Cricket Club, who play at the Killerton Estate, just outside Exeter.

The one day, 44 over series starts on Sunday 1st July at 1pm, and concludes with the second game on Saturday 7th July. Having lost the original ‘Ashes’ series in 2013, Broadclyst are out for revenge.

Baxter reacts to European Champions Cup draw

Rob Baxter says he and his Exeter Chiefs squad should relish what is another ‘exciting’ Heineken Champions Cup pool for the upcoming season.

The Chiefs have been named in Pool Two of the 2018/19 competition, lining up alongside reigning Top14 champions Castres Olympique, Irish giant Munster and Premiership rivals Gloucester.

South West Water have become official supporters of the region’s largest youth community sports event. The South West Rotary Youth Games is helping create a happier and healthier future by delivering inspiring, innovative and accessible sports and physical activity events across Devon and Cornwall.

Over 150 young people from across the region took part in the South West Rotary Youth Games Netball Finals at Paignton Community and Sports Academy last Sunday.

The event, which consisted of High 5 Netball for mixed primary aged young people and an under 13 girls’ netball competition, featured 102 young people not currently members of sport clubs.

Princesshay to host Wimbledon Big Screen

Live outdoor screenings of Wimbledon matches on a giant screen will take place in Princesshay Square for the duration of the legendary two-week tournament (Monday 2nd July – Sunday 15th July).

Princesshay will also provide deckchairs, bean bags and a temporary lawn for visitors to enjoy while watching the matches free of charge.
