Over 150 young people from across the region took part in the South West Rotary Youth Games Netball Finals at Paignton Community and Sports Academy last Sunday.

The event, which consisted of High 5 Netball for mixed primary aged young people and an under 13 girls’ netball competition, featured 102 young people not currently members of sport clubs.

Chris Broadbent, Chief Executive, South West Youth Games Trust said: “The Trust have now set out on a fresh, but very deliberate pathway to engage with more young people not currently attached to sports clubs. It is very challenging trying to bring more young people into community sport and regular physical activity. But that is the ambition we have set ourselves.

“Thanks to the hard work of England Netball and our Area Co-ordinators we succeeded in engaging young people into our netball events and linking them with local clubs and coaches to deliver a long-term legacy and a real outcome to our activities.

“Following our success of April’s Street Sports event, where we engaged with over 100 young people from hard-to-reach groups, we are now looking forward to our big Summer Finals in Dawlish on 7 July with real optimism and excitement over the real difference we can make to South West communities.”

The High 5 Netball was won by Torbay, with East Devon collecting silver and South Hams bronze. The under 13 girls Netball gold medals were won by Exeter with Teignbridge and East Devon taking silver and bronze collectively. Team Bath’s Rachel Fee, who began her career at the Youth Games, presented the medals.
