There are flood alerts for the River Axe, Lower Exe, Rivers Otter and Sid, Middle Exe, Clyst and Culm and River Teign and an amber warning remains in place for strong winds.

Update: 4pm:

Reports of an obstruction on the railway track between Exeter St Davids and Taunton currently is blocking the line.

A reduced hourly train service will run between Birmingham New Street and Plymouth.

Rydon Lane is blocked inbound near Russell Way due to a fallen tree, outbound only one lane is open. Motorists advised to find an alternative route.

Tributes paid to Joyce Cann, Dartmoor Folk Festival president

Tributes were paid to Joyce Cann, president of the Dartmoor Folk Festival and wife of the event founder, the late Bob Cann, at her funeral service held at St Andrew's Church in South Tawton.

Joyce was born in the parish of South Zeal, where she spent much of her life.

She was born Edna 'Joyce' Sampson on June 30, 1925 to Maria and William Sampson, one of three children, with an older sister called Dorothy, and a younger brother William.

Elderly man seriously injured in assault

Police are investigating after a 69-year-old man suffered serious head injuries in an unprovoked attack in Torquay.

The man was assaulted by another man on the pathway between Hele Road and Pendennis Road around 11.45pm on Saturday night [6 February].

The victim, from Torquay, was walking home when he was approached by the other man and repeatedly hit about the head.

He sustained multiple skull and facial fractures and was taken to Torbay Hospital.

Traffic signal maintenance in Exeter

Essential maintenance work is planned to start on traffic signals at the Magdalen Road/St Leonards Road/College Road Junction in Exeter on Monday 15 February.

Devon County Council will replace the signals, poles and electrics, which are at the end of their serviceable lives, and cable ducting will be replaced where required.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place while the work is carried out.

The scheme is expected to be completed on Wednesday 2 March.

WARNING as strong winds and heavy rain set to batter Devon

Police are advising people to take extra care on Monday 8 February after the Met Office issued an amber weather warning of very strong winds.

Heavy rain and strong winds with gusts of between 60 and 70 mph are likely from 3am on Monday morning.

As a result, traffic disruption is expected due to fallen trees and flooded roads.

Motorists are asked to drive carefully, allow extra time for their journeys and avoid all flooded areas.

Quitting smoking increases levels of happiness

Nearly two thirds (62%) of ex-smokers in the South West are happier since they quit smoking with around a third saying that giving up smoking has led to major lifestyle changes, according to new research commissioned by Smokefree South West to coincide with the launch of its Be There Tomorrow campaign.

The survey also reveals that the vast majority of smokers (91 per cent) experienced reduced or the same levels of anxiety after quitting, even though 35 per cent of people thought that kicking the habit would increase their levels of anxiety.

Motorists are being warned to take care on Devon’s roads today as heavy rain and gale force winds batter the region.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds, and upgraded their heavy rain warning from yellow to amber, valid until 6pm today.

Flooding has been reported across the region, along with fallen trees. Police are advising drivers to take extra care on the roads due to surface water and reduced visibility.

Exeter City’s match against Oxford United has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Stagecoach South West has announced that, due to popular demand, it is extending its sale on tickets for the luxury Stagecoach Gold route 57 until the end of February.
