Cheaper cashless parking for Devon drivers

Drivers in Devon are benefitting from cheaper cashless parking thanks to a new system that has been rolled out across the county.

Devon County Council has partnered with Bemrose Mobile to deliver the new cashless payment service, taking over from previous provider RingGo.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for on street parking, explains: “Offering cashless payment means motorists don’t have to worry about having the right change in their pockets when they use our on-street parking areas.

The Tesco Extra store in Exeter Vale has lent a helping hand to the Music in Devon Initiative’s Soundtribe Programme by sponsoring £5,000.

Music in Devon Initiative (MIDI) is a non-profit organisation founded by a group of local musicians and industry professionals. Its aim is to develop emerging talent and opportunities throughout Devon. Soundtribe is a youth programme funded by MIDI, working at grassroots level, the programme provides fully equipped rehearsal space, tuition, and guidance for young people from experienced professional musicians.

The next Exeter Board meeting will feature a discussion on cycling in the city.

Exeter residents are invited to attend the meeting and hear about Devon County Council’s Exeter Cycling Campaign.

Mr and Mrs Walter and Elsie Nicholls, residents at RMBI care home Cadogan Court in Exeter, celebrated 70 years of marriage on 4 January 2017. Residents and staff gathered in the Home's dining room to celebrate the occasion with musical entertainment by a band with banjos and a special lunch. The couple's son Jeff and his wife Sue visited to join the celebrations and supplied the Longhorn beef from their local farm. Roman celebration at RAMM

The Seaton Down Hoard Roman Roadshow will be at Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum’s (RAMM) on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February 2017.

Buried in East Devon around AD350 and only discovered in 2013, the Seaton Down Hoard is made up of 22,888 coins and three iron ingots. It is the fourth largest hoard of Roman coins ever found.

Saving it for Devon was made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Clinton Estates, a private donation by Patrick Long, and many contributions by members of the public. To celebrate its return, a Roman Roadshow is touring Devon.

A new 24 hour maternity triage service is set to launch at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, which will give expectant mums direct access to support from qualified midwives if they have concerns about their pregnancy.

The service, which opens on 23rd January, includes a new triage team of experienced midwives, a triage unit within the Ante/Postnatal Ward and a dedicated 24 hour phone number to call for help and guidance.

With New Year’s resolutions of better health and fitness for 2017 firmly in focus, an astonishing 65 Exeter residents turned up in the first week of January to try out a new Couch to 5k beginner running group in Heavitree.

University of Exeter’s Forum to become giant ski slope

More than 48 tonnes of real snow are to be delivered by lorry to the University’s Streatham Campus and dumped outside the Forum to create a giant ski slope.

The spectacular transformation of Forum Hill is being organised for a regional snow sports competition which will see 30 skiers and snowboarders from six universities from the South West region perform freestyle tricks.
