Have you ever wondered what fascinating marine life lurks in the pools left behind when the tide is low?

Join the East Devon District Council Countryside Rangers on one of their Rockpool Rambles, to explore these unique habitats and the creatures that live there, and find out how they are adapted to their challenging environment.

No need to book, just turn up with a net and a bucket if you have them. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The Rockpool Rambles are free events, but donations are welcome.

Devon's businesses need to combat skills gap

Action is required to stem a skills crisis in the South West, warns new research today.

The Prince’s Trust and HSBC report suggests that 69 per cent of South West businesses believe a significant skills crisis will hit their organisations within the next three years while 43 per cent predict it will happen within the next 12 months. Two thirds of South West businesses surveyed fear skills shortages will halt the UK's economic recovery, while a third fear it would cause their business to fold.

Beams lifted into place on South Devon Link Road Project

After an anxious two days of waiting, one of three largest cranes in the UK lifted the beams into place for the new bridge at Maddacombe Road as part of the South Devon Link Road Project.

Locals gathered on Friday to watch the crane lift the three 94 tonne concrete beams. Unfortunately however, a number of small issues during the testing stage led to a delay in proceedings until Saturday morning.

Work to start on new link to Tithebarn Lane

Preparatory work on a new road connection to Tithebarn Lane, on the outskirts of Exeter, is due to start on site on Monday (11 August).

The new £3 million road will link the existing Tithebarn Lane bridge and the northern end of Science Park to a new roundabout which will be constructed on Cumberland Way.

The route forms part of the access strategy to the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point. The improvements will offer an alternative route for local traffic to help tackle congestion and improve the resilience of both the A30 and M5. It will also become an important bus route...

Tropical storm likely to just be hot air

Speculation that a tropical storm from the Bahamas will career into the South West this weekend has abounded today, following a Met Office announcement. The tropical storm, a result of Hurricane Bertha, is currently off the north-east coast of the U.S. and likely to push northwards. Despite claims in the media that the storm could “smash” into the UK, bringing destruction in its wake, the Met Office itself is rather more sanguine about it.

DCF reaches £10m milestone and welcomes new chairman

Devon Community Foundation is celebrating having given more than £10 million in grants to over 6,000 projects helping local people in need across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay since its start.

Last year saw £700,000 in grants help over 55,000 people in need in the county. This year also saw the Foundation leap into action in response to flood and storm damage helping 119 individuals, 3 businesses and six community groups rebuild their lives after having been flooded.

Alongside this the Foundation has grown its endowment from £1.8 million to £4 million in just five years....

Met Office warn of heavy rain tonight

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across Devon tonight.

The warning is in place from 10pm until 7am tomorrow.

Heavy rain is expected to spread from the South West during this evening, affecting many areas overnight before clearing early on Wednesday morning. There could be localised surface water flooding.
