Call for volunteers to survey Devon churches for bats this summer

The Bats in Churches project is appealing for volunteers in Devon to come forward and help with the final year of the National Bats in Churches Survey, an ambitious citizen science project to discover more about how and why bats are using churches.

It’s thought at least 60 per cent of pre-16th Century churches in England house bat roosts, but the true figure could be much higher. The Environment Agency is reminding roofers and builders in Devon and Cornwall to take responsibility for their waste.

Most roofers and builders are law-abiding and take their duty of care seriously when it comes to waste management. But the reminder comes after agency officers found a large amount of buried asbestos waste when executing a search warrant at a site in the South West. The operator of the site was arrested by the police and questioned.

Bathing water season begins in Devon

The bathing water season started on 15 May with the Environment Agency carrying out regular testing of water quality at designated bathing sites across Devon and Cornwall until the end of September. High standards of water quality at swimming locations are important for everyone’s enjoyment of beaches across the south west. Throughout the bathing season the Environment Agency will issue warnings of any forecasted pollution risk on its Swimfo website.
