Grants available to keep Devon homes cosy

Homeowners and private-rented householders in selected areas of Devon are being offered grants of up to £7,000 to help insulate their homes.

Teignbridge, North Devon and Torridge district councils are working with Cosy Devon and E.ON to provide new 'Pioneer Places' grants towards the cost of solid wall insulation. The funding has been awarded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, with North Devon Council leading the project.

Three treated after Dawlish house blaze

Three people needed treatment after fire broke out at a property in Dawlish in the early hours of this morning (Monday 31 August).

Fire crews were called to a report of smoke issuing from a property in Roscoff Road, Dawlish just before 2am.

One fire appliance from Dawlish and two from Teignmouth attended the incident.

The three-storey building is used as flats. The fire was in the kitchen of the ground-floor flat and involved tea towels and a washer dryer.

Two pupils at a Tiverton school have been shortlisted for the 2015 Student of the Year Awards, a national programme to recognise talent and hard work and celebrate success.

Chris Hamilton and Natalie Cotton, both aged 17 and pupils at Blundell’s School, have been shortlisted in the Science and Engineering category and will attend the awards ceremony in London next month, when the winners of the first Student of the Year Awards will be announced.

South Devon Highway work warning

Galliford Try will be carrying out a three-week phase of works on the A380 north of the Penn Inn Roundabout commencing Wednesday 2nd September. These works will require a series of temporary lane closures and overnight road closures.

The planning has included discussions with South West Highways, who are managing the Teign Viaduct works and maintenance works between Ware Barton and Telegraph Hill. Works have been coordinated where possible, to minimise disruption to road users.

Lane closures after Telegraph Hill crash

Emergency services were called to a collision on Telegraph Hill this morning (31 August).

A spokesperson for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: “Fire crews from Topsham, Middlemoor and Danes Castle were mobilised to reports of a collision involving one vehicle on the A380 at around 8.30am.

“Crews found one person trapped within the vehicle and used hydraulic cutting equipment to release.

“The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance service.”

The road was closed, Torquay-bound, for around 30 minutes, but was reopened just after 9am....
