Solicitors Beviss & Beckingsale, which has offices in Honiton, Axminster, Seaton and Chard, has beaten off stiff competition to make it to the finals of the Devon & Somerset Law Society Legal Awards 2017.

A panel of judges selected Beviss & Beckingsale to go forward as a finalist in the category Law Firm of the Year (1 to 10 partners).

The awards, which were held for the first time last year, recognise the important contribution that law firms make to local communities and the economy in the two counties.

Tesco prizes boost over 50s raffle

A team from the Tesco Extra Exeter Vale store donated has donated Tesco gift cards in the value of £100 for this year’s Wonford Community Centre & Learning Centre over 50’s raffle.

Colleagues from the store, in the shopping centre on Russell Way hand delivered the gift cards, as well as various other prizes valued at a total of £100 to the Wondford Community Centre’s raffle, held at the centre on Burnthouse Lane, Exeter. Samaritans volunteers on duty over festive period

In a typical month the Exeter, Mid and East Devon branch of the Samaritans charity receives 1,800 telephone calls from people in distress - and that figure increases in December and especially around Christmas time.

Those calls - along with SMS text messages, emails and face-to-face meetings - are dealt with by some 100 volunteers who work at the central Exeter base of the charity.

Householders are being urged to think of the environment over the festive period and keep recycling to ensure that Devon has a ‘green’ Christmas.

Police urge public to report domestic abuse

Devon and Cornwall Police is launching a campaign designed to raise awareness of how domestic abuse can affect anyone and takes many forms.

The campaign will highlight the fact that domestic abuse can happen to anyone, at any age, in any kind of relationship. This phase will be highlighting the fact that domestic abuse can happen among groups such as the elderly, the disabled and same sex couples.

Exeter Forum helps to keep patients warm this winter

The Exeter Forum have donated bags of knitted woollen hats to the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to help warm up hypothermic patients this winter.

The Forum is a social group for active retired people who meet regularly in Exeter. Members of the Forum were keen to continue their support for the Emergency Department after they donated a large number of knitted Twiddlemuffs to help patients with Dementia earlier in the year.

Cotley Christmas Tree Farm welcomed a highly unexpected arrival in the summer of this year.

Cotley Farm owner, Helen Bowker, says “It turns out that the calf was born a little early and her mother didn’t have any milk at first. Even if she had, the baby reindeer was so small she couldn’t have reached the teats! So for the first 10 days of her life, I had to hand feed her with a bottle. Luckily she grew quickly and was soon able to feed from her mother – which was a relief as reindeer milk is 20% fat so is hard to substitute for a long period.
