£1m flood improvements for Axminster approved

Plans for a near £1 million flood improvement scheme in East Devon have been approved by Devon County Council’s Cabinet.

Councillors today (Wednesday 14 December) agreed to increase the budget for the scheme which will improve flood protection for properties at Axminster Millbrook.

Over 40 properties were flooded in Axminster during severe storms in 2012, with The Cricketers and Willhay Lane the main areas affected.

Devon’s JSA claimants increase slightly in November

Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon increased by 13 during November.

This is the first rise in claimants since February - the total claimant count now standing at 2,860, 23% lower than the same time last year.

Three of Devon’s eight districts experienced small increases in JSA – North Devon the highest at 26 claimants, closely followed by Exeter at 22, and South Hams at four.

Small falls were experienced in all the other Devon districts – Mid Devon having the largest month on month drop in claimants at 24, with West Down down by seven, Teignbridge down...

Grieving granddaughter's beautiful poem put to music

Back in 2014, Exeter Hospiscare staff were very touched when 12 year old Josie Sanders handed them a beautiful poem.

Josie’s poem expressed how she felt about her experience with the local charity after her Granddad Geoff Fletcher, 80, spent his last few days at the city hospice.

Just six weeks earlier he had been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Josie wrote the poem as a way of coping with her grief and to express how overwhelmed her whole family were by the support they received at Hospiscare.

Exeter City Football Club have kitted up future stars at Exeter College to celebrate both 15 years of partnership and Futsal becoming part of the college Sports Academy offer.

The long-established partnership with the college has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now sees 45 students on the men’s academy, 23 on the women’s academy, and 50 students combined taking part in the level two and three futsal Academy.

Driver hurt after car transporter overturns in Mid Devon

Police are appealing to the public following a serious collision which left one man with serious injuries.

At approximately 5.47pm on Monday 12 December, a single vehicle collision occurred on the A361 at Crazy Loman Bridge, Tiverton.

A white Scania car transporter, travelling in the direction of Bolham, left the road causing it to roll into the nearside. The vehicle was transporting approximately ten cars.
