Exeter golf course to be redesigned

Exeter Golf and Country Club has secured funding from Charles Church, part of the Persimmon Group, towards the redesign of its golf course. The deal comes after two years of negotiations between the Club and housebuilder over how to ensure the safety of residents of Great Woodcote Park, a new housing development being built next to the golf course. The Club had been advised by two separate specialist golf architects that the houses were sited too close to the boundary, increasing the risk of golf balls leaving the course and causing injury or damage. The shortlist for the Food Reader Awards 2015 has been announced and Exeter is harbouring a wealth of foodie finalists.

Darts Farm, Boston Tea Party, Chandos Deli and Michael Caines have all been nominated and voted for by Food Magazine readers in their hundreds, and luckily there’ll be no neighbourly competition as all of Exeter’s finalists will be representing the city in different categories.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are encouraging you to ‘Register my appliance’ so your home is safer.

Did you know that only 36% of consumers register all of their large domestic appliances? This leaves thousands off the radar if a recall is required.

New research reveals just over a third of British purchasers currently register all of their appliances with the manufacturer, leaving many thousands of owners virtually untraceable if a safety repair is required.

Topsham Road in Exeter has been closed following a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry.

Emergency sevices were called to the scene of the collision at around 1pm today.

The road has been closed between Countess Wear Roundabout and Burnthouse Lane.

Police have set up diversions at Barrack Road and Countess Wear, and buses are being diverted.

A public exhibition will be held by Devon County Council on proposals to introduce traffic calming measures on Blundell’s Road in Tiverton. With housing and employment development planned to the east of Tiverton, improvements are needed on the local road infrastructure. Four Devon primary schools, including one in Exeter, have been chosen to take part in a national initiative aimed at developing global education.

Redhills primary and pre-school in Exeter, Lady Modiford’s in Walkhampton and Meavy and Offwell schools have been selected to develop international links with Tanzania as part of a major new school twinning project.

Wild pollinators at risk from commercial bees

A new study from the University of Exeter has found that viruses carried by commercial bees can jump to wild pollinator populations with potentially devastating effects.

The researchers are calling for new measures to be introduced that will prevent the introduction of diseased pollinators into natural environments.

Dementia drop-in centre opens in Topsham

A new information dementia drop in centre has been opened at Topsham Pharmacy and is open on Thursdays between 10am and noon.

Run by volunteers, it is somewhere people to come to find out what support maybe available to them and generally answer any questions they may have on dementia.

Sallie Rutledge who runs The Mede and Seaward House (holiday and day support for people with dementia) in Topsham says: "There's little help at times for the carer and they can feel very isolated.

"We are hoping carers will come to us and tell us what they need....

Keep warm and well this winter

As the colder weather sets in, Devon’s health chiefs are providing some top tips to staying healthy this winter.

Devon County Council’s Director of Public Health, Dr Virginia Pearson, is reminding people of some simple ways to protect themselves, and their NHS, over the cold weather period.
