Every Spring and Autumn Freemasons from all parts of Devon meet to give support totalling in excess of £50,000 to local charities & organisations throughout the county who are in need of assistance, we were one of the groups nominated by their local lodge, Northcote Lodge.

The money is raised by the “WAKE Fund” a trust conceived by the Right Worshipful Brother William Alexander Kneel, the Provincial Grand Master from 1970 to 1984, the late owner of Kneels laundry & dry cleaners (now Johnsons). Bicton Arena is readying itself for the conclusion to the 2019 eventing season, and with nearly 700 entries for its competition, which runs from October 24 to 27, it will be a superb finale for riders and spectators alike.Competing at the event is the 2014 Badminton Horse Trials winner Sam Griffiths, World Equestrian Games 2018 silver medallist Padraig McCarthy and multiple British team medallist William Fox-Pitt.

Confidence giving courses at this weekend’s Bicton Arena Horse Trials

Organisers of this weekend’s Bicton Arena Horse Trials are working around the clock to ensure the best going possible for its affiliated competition in light of the long spell of dry weather.

Showjumping, including the warm up area, will take place on all-weather surfaces, the dressage arenas have been watered and the cross country courses have been aggravated with sand on takes offs and landings where appropriate.

Proms success at Bicton Gardens

The beautiful gardens of Bicton Park were awash with red, white and blue as 900 people enjoyed a spectacular show for Hospiscare’s Proms in the Park last Saturday.

The rain clouds stayed away as the night opened with the big brass sounds of the South West Comms Band who were followed by the gifted voices of India’s finest tenor, Anando Mukerjee and the UK’s own inspirational Laure Meloy.

The musical arrangement included songs from musicals and popular operatic arias such as La Traviata and Boheme.

A world-class field will be contesting Empire Coachbuilders Bicton Arena International Horse Trials, which run on August 22, and 23.

They include four riders in the FEI top 20 rider rankings – William Fox-Pitt, Sam Griffiths, Jonathan Paget and Paul Tapner - as well as a number of other well-known eventing stars.

World number two William Fox-Pitt will ride nine horses including his international four-star horse Cool Mountain in the open intermediate.

Anyone for outdoor table tennis?

Anyone for table tennis? People are going batty in the parish of East Budleigh with Bicton now they have their own outdoor table.

The new table has come about after developers who built two new homes in the parish gave £3,450 to fund a sports facility in the community, as part of a Section 106 legal agreement with East Devon District Council.

Showjumping action delights at Bicton

Bicton Arena's six day show, the largest ever competition staged at the venue, has been hailed a huge success by riders who travelled from across the UK to compete in a range of showjumping classes from novice to Grand Prix.

Robert Whitaker, a member of the famous showjumping clan bearing that name, was attending the show for the first time and was richly rewarded with some stunning results.

Hundreds of showjumpers will be heading to the popular East Devon venue when it stages its most ambitious show to date Bicton Arena will be staging the biggest show in its history when a six day long showjumping spectacular begins on June 12.

Eight hundred horses will be jumping over the six days in three arenas over heights ranging from 80cms to a 1.40m Grand Prix, sponsored by Stockdale Asset Management.
