Plans revealed for Devon’s dementia care Centres of Excellence

Families of residents at a Devon care home have welcomed new plans to tranform the home into a new dementia care Centre of Excellence.

Plans for the first two of Devon County Council's Centres of Excellence, at Mapleton in Newton Abbot and Woodland Vale in Torrington, go on show this week.

Open days at the homes are giving residents, their families, as well as staff and others, the first opportunity to see the plans.

They are the first of up to ten Council homes to be redeveloped over three years in their £11.2 million improvement programme.

Outlining its plans to cope with population growth, climate change and new environmental legislation, South West Water has published its proposed business strategy for 2015-2040.

The 25-year 'What's in the Pipeline' outlook has been published ahead of the 2014 Price Review, which will establish investment and water charges in England and Wales between 2015 and 2020. Exeter Festival of Winter Ales at the Park

After the roaring success of last year’s event, the Exeter & East Devon branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) are once again hosting their Festival of Winter Ales at St James Park this weekend.

The 24th edition of the festival is taking place on the evenings of Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January, open from 11am–11pm on both days. Admission is £2, or CAMRA members can enter for free. Students can also enter for free with a valid NUS after 5pm on Saturday.

NHS Devon urge "at risk" people to get free flu jab

The NHS in Devon is urging people who are in ‘at risk’ groups to visit their GP to get a free flu vaccination if they have not already done so this winter.

People who are in the clinical at risk groups are 11 times more likely to die if they get flu than a “healthy” person – for some groups, like those with chronic degenerative neurological diseases, that risk rises to 40 times.

HMV hopeful of buyer to prevent job losses

Despite news that the administrators have been called in, HMV has announced that its stores are open and trading as normal. However, it is not currently accepting gift vouchers or issuing any more until further notice.

Disruptions on Stagecoach's 57 service due to RTA

UPDATE 11.41am: The road has now been reopened and services are returning to their normal timetable.

There are currently diversions in place on Stagecoach's 57 Exeter - Exmouth service due to a road closure following a Road Traffic Accident on the Exmouth Road (A376) between Lympstone Marine Camp and Lympstone Village.

From Exeter: service is running as normal as far as Lympstone Marine Camp then diverting across Woodbury Common, down Hulham Road and into Exmouth where we will resume the normal route.

Exeter Christian Nurse loses religious discrimination battle

Judges at the European Court of Human Rights have ruled that Exeter Christian nurse Shirley Chaplin, 57, was not the victim of religious discrimination by her employers at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

Ms Chaplin was transferred to a desk job by Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust Hospital in 2009 for failing to remove a confirmation crucifix on a small chain, which she had worn to work for 30 years.

The hospital said it had acted in an appropriate and sensitive matter.

Exeter Police seek witnesses after fatal collision

Update: The man has been formally identified as David Michael Howard Hill, aged 64 years, of Harbertonford near Totnes.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died in a collision on Monday evening. At about 18.10 hrs on Monday (14th January 2013) a single vehicle Road Traffic Collision occurred on the A379 at Peamore on the outskirts of Exeter, Devon.

A car travelling from the direction of Marsh Barton, Exeter towards Kennford left the carriageway to the offside entering the central reservation.
