Dawlish Line could re-open early

Work on to re-open the railway line could be completed earlier than expected, according to Network Rail. The work to repair the area of track destroyed during the recent heavy storms was initially expected to be completed by mid-March but was pushed back to mid-April after further storm damage frustrated repairs. However the Rail Minister, Steve Hammond, said the rail company had given a “commitment” that “if they can beat that target they will.” He continued: "Network Rail had a good weekend last weekend and they have had some 20-hour days." EDDC wins pig farm appeal

East Devon District Council has successfully defended its decision to refuse planning permission for a pig unit comprising two buildings, slurry store, attenuation pond and access track at Collyhead Farm, Venn Ottery.

In a decision announced today (Monday 24 February), Planning Inspector Pete Drew concludes that the proposed development “would harm the character and appearance of this designated landscape”.

The Council refused Mr Chris Down’s application (revision of 10/1954/MFUL) in September 2012.

WESC Foundation to host Open Day

On 27 February 2014, WESC Foundation will host an Academies Open Day aimed at informing teachers, principals, Special Education Needs (SEN) professionals and anyone who works with visually impaired young people in an academy setting on how they can best support learners with a visual impairment.

Youth Service campaigners to consider legal action.

Campaigners against proposed cuts to Devon County Council’s youth service have said they are considering legal action as they believe the authority may have violated international law.

The dispute came to a head last Thursday when 17-year-old campaigner Alfie Weaver was denied a chance to address the council at a meeting to set the council’s budget for 2014/15.

The budget included a reduction of nearly £1m to the council’s youth service which could potentially see the closure of the council’s youth centres after the completion of a consultation process.
