The Government must review its flooding and coastal defence policies and commit more money to reducing further risks to the British countryside, the NFU said today. The call comes as part of the NFU’s new flooding manifesto which was launched at this morning at the second day of the union’s annual conference in Birmingham. The flooding manifesto calls for the targeted protection of high quality farmland and a reduction of the impact of urban flood defences to rural areas arguing that farming land was being sacrificed as the lowest priority in managing the nation’s floods. Network Rail has said they will consider five alternative routes as a long term response to the destroyed line at Dawlish.

Options include creating a new passenger route using the existing freight train lines at Alphington and Heathfield near Newton Abbot. Another option is to reinstate the closed Okehampton line which is expected to cost up to £700m. Three new routes travelling to Newton Abbot propose new tunnels being built and would maintain a high number of trains travelling through Dawlish. Review: Motherland at Tiverton Community Arts Centre, 22 February

This play was well worth the drive from Plymouth!

Stage-Wright Productions backed a winner in Suze Gardner's Motherland. A double first: new company and new play.

The script was amusing and informative, and portrayed the main character to perfection. We all know of Marie Stopes, but few know of her controversial and pioneering birth control clinics had a dual purpose: perporting to help the poorest of women limit the number of offspring, but equally furthering Stopes' rather more sinister involvement in eugenics. The script brought to light her dodgy personal contacts with...

How to become an ISA Millionaire

The traditional routes to becoming a millionaire – marriage, inheritance, the lottery or a genius business idea – might seem a bit fanciful to many of us but, with ISA season upon us, reports suggest that there may be many ISA millionaires in the UK already. In fact several ISA investors at Brewin Dolphin, through judicial investment directly in equities, have amassed ISAs worth over £1 million. Brewin Dolphin has 15 clients with ISAs worth millions each and 40 with ISAs over £750k; though these clients pursued a direct equity strategy and were certainly prepared to take risks. The total...
