NHS 111 rolls out across Devon

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) has launched the NHS111 service across the whole of Devon (Monday 10 March).

The service was initially launched in part of the county in September last year, but now the remaining areas will also switch to 111.

NHS 111 has already replaced the previous NHS Direct and from today it replaces GP out-of-hours telephone numbers in throughout the remainder of the county (Mid Devon and North Devon has already switched).

Green light for St Luke’s refurbishment project

A major refurbishment project at the University of Exeter medical school will begin later this month after being granted funding and planning permission.

The work expected to cost over £10.5 million will improve on facilities at the University’s St Luke’s Campus by providing more space for teaching and student study.

The Kenn Art Show

The Kenn Art Show was founded in 2006 and, since then, it has grown into a successful and prestigious bi-annual event. Profits from the show will be going to St Andrew’s Church in Kenn, and to the Kenn Centre, where the show is taking place this year.

Great White Shark on course for South West Coast

A 15ft great white shark named Lydia is on course to arrive at the South West coast later this week coast according to scientists tracking her via satellite tag.

Lydia, already the first recorded example of her species to cross the Atlantic, is now less than 1000 miles from UK shores and if she keeps to her current course and speed may arrive at the Cornish coast within a few days.

Lydia was first tagged off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, last March by the researchers for the Ocearch scientific project and since then US scientists have been tracking Lydia for 19,000...

Queen to honour Exeter historian with MBE

Historian Dr Todd Gray has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his voluntary services to Devon heritage.

The investiture is at Buckingham Palace on Friday 14 March. For almost a century, University of Exeter historians have actively been involved in Devon based historical studies and societies, all of which survive on voluntary work. The University provided leadership on this active engagement in 1920 when the History department began a programme of Exeter studies and encouraged staff to run local history organisations.

Government promise £140 million for flood damaged roads

An extra £140 million of road repair funding has been pledged by the Government this weekend to aid clear-ups following the severe winter storms.

The extra funding, announced by the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin on Sunday (9 March), will see a further £103.5 million of funding spread across all UK local authorities while another £36.5 million will be targeted only on the worst hit areas.

While it is still uncertain how much of this funding will be made available to repair Devon’s 8,000 mile road network, the extra funding is unlikely to make much impact to the...

The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel is hosting a ‘Pink Pig Racing’ event on Thursday 13 March to raise money for its charity of the year, Hospiscare. The event will see a line up of fluffy toy pigs race each other along a specially designed course to the finish line. Teams of five are invited to take part in the charity event. 70 people attended the last pig racing event in May 2013, raising over £450 for the charity.

So far the Hotel has raised more than £6500 for Hospiscare and is hoping to soon reach their target of £7500.
