Cranbrook’s first town council elected

Cranbrook’s first ever town council members have been elected.

There are 12 vacancies on the new body that will be set up to manage local governance for the new community.

Nine people stepped forward for the seats on the new town council and so all nine are duly elected uncontested.

The new council is quorate (it has enough members to carry out its duties) but there will be an opportunity to co-opt three more members in the future.

A notice announcing the result of the search for new town councillors is on display at Younghayes community centre.

BBC drama The Coroner to be filmed in Devon

BBC One has announced that Claire Goose and Matt Bardock will lead the cast of a new daytime drama, The Coroner.

Claire Goose (Casualty & Waking the Dead) will play Jane, the Coroner and Matt Bardock (Casualty) will play Davey, the local Detective Sergeant. They will be joined by Grace Hogg-Robinson (Birdhouse) who will play Beth, the Coroner’s daughter, Oliver Gomm who will play Clint, the Coroner’s Officer, Beatie Edney (Poldark) who will play Judith, Jane’s Mother and Ivan Kaye (Layer Cake & Eastenders), who will play Mick, the pub landlord.

Exe Estuary Teaching program wins industry award

A teaching resource, to help school children learn all about coastal areas, has won an industry award.

Living with a Changing Coast (LiCCo) is a european project helping coastal communities to better understand, prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change, sea level rise and erosion on the natural and human environment on both sides of the channel.

Its UK partners include the Environment Agency, the Exe Estuary Management Partnership, Devon County Council and the National Trust.

Pedestrian seriously injured in collision

Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision in Sidmouth which left a 65-year-old pedestrian with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to Church Street in Sidford at 6pm yesterday (16 April) after a Vauxhall Corsa car-derived van was in collision with the male pedestrian.

The Sidmouth man sustained serious injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Seaton, was uninjured.
