Pinhoe Library to get free Wi-Fi

Library users in Pinhoe, Exeter, are getting a helping hand with using the internet as part of a new nationwide digital inclusion initiative.

Devon County Council has joined forces with BT and Barclays as part of their campaign to bring free Wifi and hands-on digital support to communities across the UK.

The County Council’s library in Pinhoe is one of 100 UK centres taking part in the initiative, which aims to support the Government’s Digital Inclusion strategy to reduce the number of people offline in the UK by 25% by 2016.

Beach sink hole mystery may be solved

The mystery behind the Exmouth Beach sink hole which has opened up three times over the last six weeks may finally be resolved.

Following a tip off from a member of the public, East Devon District Council engineers have discovered a South West Water pipe deep under the sand which looks like it has become blocked in some way.

The engineers will now be working with South West Water and contractors over the coming weeks to resolve the problem. Once the council has completed its investigations, it will be able to confirm a more accurate timescale.

Thrive Summer Series heads for Exeter

The Thrive Summer Series, a brand new initiative aiming to get the nation active, is heading to Princesshay on Saturday 5th September as part of a nationwide tour.

The Thrive team will be running activities to get shoppers moving.

Local activity groups are invited to join the Thrive team and be part of Exeter leg of the tour. Dance teachers, fitness instructors, martial arts gurus and walking group leaders are all welcome to join the event.

Thrive will feature fun and motivating characters such as Wilma Whistle and Dr Spin.

Appeal after spate of derelict building fires

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are issuing an urgent warning about the danger of derelict buildings, after the recent fires at the Quality Hotel in Plymouth. People are putting themselves and those that work for the emergency services at risk.

In the last few weeks fire crews from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service have been called to tackle two deliberate fires at the empty and run-down Quality Hotel on the Hoe.

To celebrate 125 years since the laying of the foundation stone, the Barnfield Theatre is creating a free public exhibition of its varied and fascinating history.
