Fire crews tackle barn blaze

Fire crews were called to a barn fire in East Devon earlier today (Monday 5 October).

Fire Control mobilised appliances from Seaton, Colyton, Axminster and the water carrier from Exeter to reports of a fire within a barn at a farm near Musbury.

On arrival crews found one building measuring 120m x 20m containing straw and livestock, efforts were made to remove straw and farm vehicles.

Three hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera, drag forks and two breathing apparatus were in use.

The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.

They magically find themselves in Exeter in 2015 rhyming children through Grimm’s Fairy Tales such as The Fisherman and His Wife. Children will have the opportunity to decorate their own magic paper wishing fish.

Charge for carrier bags comes into force

The 5p charge for single-use plastic carrier bags comes into effect today (5 October).

The charge, which will apply for all retailers with 250 or more full-time employees, is expected to significantly reduce the number of plastic bags taken from shops. It follows the success of similar schemes in Scotland and Wales – in Wales the charge led to a 79 per cent decrease in plastic bags in three years.

In 2014, 7.64 billion single use plastic bags were given out by major supermarkets in England.

Exeter professor takes up new role

Professor Roy Sambles has taken up his position as the new president of the Institute of Physics (IOP).

Professor Sambles, from the University of Exeter’s Physics and Astronomy department, succeeds Dr Frances Saunders in the prestigious role and will serve as president for two years. He has served as president-elect since October 2013, having been chosen by the IoP’s Council.

Professor Sambles has been professor of experimental physics at the University of Exeter since 1991, where he is academic lead of the large electromagnetic and acoustic materials research group....

Premier League Darts returns to Exeter

THE world's leading darts players will return to the Westpoint Arena in Exeter for the 2016 Betway Premier League on Thursday March 3.

The £700,000 Betway Premier League, televised live on Sky Sports, sees an initial ten-player field competing across four months at 16 arena venues to contest for the prestigious title, which was won by Somerset-based Gary Anderson in May 2015.

Institute of Physics lecture at Exeter School

Exeter School was delighted to welcome Dr Natalie Garrett to Exeter School on 28 September to give two talks on her work as a Biophotonics researcher at the University of Exeter.

The lecture was sponsored by the Institute of Physics and Dr Garrett presented her work to a group of around 90 Sixth Form scientists in the morning and all Middle Fifth pupils, as well as around 100 pupils from other local schools, in the afternoon.

Children's author hosts storytime session in Exeter

As part of Dyslexia Awareness Week 2015, Tom McLaughlin, children’s author and illustrator will be hosting a story time session at Waterstones in Exeter (High Street branch).

Tom will be showcasing showcasing two of his children’s books by Bloomsbury Publishing, as well as sharing his own personal experiences of dyslexia on Monday 5 October.

At the story session, Tom, who is local to Exeter, will be reading from The Story Machine and The Cloudspotter.

The writing was on the wall for Exmouth’s mayor at the opening of a new graffiti wall at Phear Park

On Saturday 26 September, 75 enthusiastic young people picked up cans of spray paint to help local artist Ryan Stuart create a vibrant example of street art on a new graffiti wall at Phear Park in Exmouth as part of a joint East Devon District Council and Exmouth Town Council community initiative.
