Top gardening tips to help the humble hedgehog will be on offer at a wildlife event this Saturday (October 17) at Seaton Wetlands.

East Devon District Council’s Countryside Team will be working in their wildlife garden from 10am to 2pm to improve the area for our prickly friends. Come along and learn about what hedgehogs need from a garden, and just why our gardens are increasingly important refuges for these wonderful creatures. There is even the opportunity to pre-book a hedgehog box kit to make and take home with you.

Exeter Monopoly board launches

The city dubbed too posh to have an Old Kent Road on its own official Monopoly board, launched today (Wednesday 14 October), is to be honoured with TWO "Mayfairs".

Exeter hit the national headlines earlier in the year, as social media went into overdrive, after it was claimed Devon’s ancient capital city was just too well-heeled to have its’ own equivalent of Old Kent Road. Members of the East Devon District Council Conservative Group were treated to a guided tour of Exmouth’s RNLI station on Saturday (10 October), including an in-depth look at the South West’s first Shannon class lifeboat – the R and J Welburn. They were shown around the lifeboat station by Coxswain Steve Hockings-Thompson and members of his volunteer crew. A director is being sought to lead the development of culture in the city.

The new role, created by Exeter Cultural Partnership and hosted by the University of Exeter, offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced individual to implement a strategy that will fulfil the city’s long term ambition of becoming a leading cultural destination.

The post holder will be tasked with achieving the goals set out within the Cultural Action Plan for Exeter, drawing on the shared sense of vision, enthusiasm and commitment from the city’s cultural organisations.

Princesshay's security get set for Great West Run

Members of the Princesshay security team are limbering up for the annual Great West Run in Exeter on 18th October, to raise money for Princesshay’s charity of the year, Age UK Exeter.

David Purse, Princesshay Security Manager, will be leading the team of five through the testing half marathon race. Their aim is to raise £2000 in sponsorship for Age UK Exeter. This donation will help fund services and activities across the city in support of older people in the local community.

£6m funding boost for local sport

A rowing club for 80-year-olds, a sailing project based in a canal in central London and a boxing club that has cut village crime are just a few of the 91 local schemes that are looking forward to making the most of a £6,039,499 million National Lottery funding boost.

Projects in Devon which are to receive funding include:

Exeter Cricket Club is to receive £50,312 to purchase new nets. The club’s existing net facilities will be lost as a result of redevelopment. The new nets will help to keep current members from leaving and attract new players.
