Donations to local group will be doubled this week as part of national match funding campaign

Topsham based charity, Estuary League of Friends, have launched their appeal to raise £10,000 in a week to provide vital services to support people in need of care, comfort and support in rural communities between Exeter and Exmouth.

The appeal is part of national match funding campaign #SmallCharityWeek . Donations made to Estuary online at BigGive.org between 23–30 June 2025 will be matched £1 for £1. So, a gift of £10 becomes £20, £50 becomes £100, and so on!

All the funds raised will be used to deliver vital services for the community such as:

City-bound side of Bridge Road closed overnight tonight

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed in one direction overnight tonight (Monday 20 August).

The city bound road closure will take place from 8pm tonight until 6am tomorrow morning (Tuesday 21 August) when the road will re-open.

The closure is needed to carry out repairs to some defective deck components that were discovered during a detailed inspection of the Bascule Bridge last week.

When Frazer Wilton’s auntie contacted Stagecoach South West regarding her “bus obsessed” 5 year old nephew, the staff at Frazer’s local depot in Torquay decided to arrange a big surprise for a very special little boy.

Frazer - who was diagnosed with Late Infantile Battens disease, a genetic life-limiting neurodegenerative disease, in February 2018 - has always shown a love for buses since an early age.

Six Exeter friends to embark on a 670-mile charity cycle ride

Six men will be embarking on a 670-mile cycle trip across Europe next month, with the help of Exeter City FC, in memory of a friend and to raise much-needed funds and awareness for three charities.

The six cyclists – Steve Christie, Christian Webber, Mark Reece, Pete Wallington, Mark Holmes and Rich Cook – will peddle from Portsmouth to Munich on Wednesday, September 19. The date is the birthday of their good friend Jason Cloke who, due to a genetic illness called haemochromatosis, died at the age of 42 in 2010.

Residents, commuters and visitors to Barnstaple on Monday September 3 are advised to leave more time for their journey as the Tour of Britain returns to the town.

Starting in Cranbrook, East Devon, the race covers 174km (108miles) of Devon countryside before finishing in Barnstaple town centre - and large numbers of spectators are expected to visit on race day.

Almost £200,000 available for East Devon projects

Almost £200,000 is now available for East Devon community projects through the Communities Together Fund and voluntary and community groups, town and parish councils, community interest companies and registered charities can now apply for funding from this grant pot.

The fund money has been given by East Devon District and Devon County Councils. For every elector in the district, East Devon has put 10p into the grant pot and Devon County Council put forward £1.

Planning application submitted for new bridge in Sidmouth

A planning application has been submitted for a new bridge over the River Sid in Sidmouth.

Following a consultation earlier this year, Devon County Council has refined the design of the structure, amending its appearance and changing the materials which are proposed to be used.

The planned new footbridge would replace Alma Bridge, and would be approximately 37 metres upstream from the existing structure.

The bridge features a 19-metre span and would be accessed by short sections of steep ramps.
