Redrow is working with the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) on their annual Summer Water Safety Campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of swimming in open water and publicise some simple advice to make sure people are enjoying the summer weather safely.

Redrow is the first housebuilder to team up directly with the RLSS and together they are hoping to educate people on the risks associated with swimming in open water. The campaign launched at the start of the summer holidays, which are a particularly dangerous time as children are out of school and often unsupervised. The scorching hot weather the UK is experiencing this year means it is even more important than usual for people to be conscious of how to stay safe.

The aim of the RLSS’ campaign is to promote a common-sense approach to water safety, with helpful advice rather than issuing strict instructions. Redrow has produced five animated GIFs based on the five campaign tips and both organisations will be sharing some of these on social media throughout the summer.

The five animated tips can be viewed on our blog here: https://www.redrow.co.uk/newsroom/national/2018/7/working-with-the-rlss-...

Vicki Hartley-Kite, Director of Communications & Public Affairs at the Royal Life Saving Society, said: “We have been running the Summer Water Safety Campaign for several years and it’s fantastic to be working with a company of Redrow’s size to help raise further awareness.

“It’s particularly tempting to go for a swim during the warm summer months, but people often don’t think before they get into the water. In the last 2 weeks alone, the media have reported at least 10 UK citizens losing their lives to drowning.  By publicising these tips we hope to stop any more tragically preventable deaths. We want people to enjoy water, but safely and sensibly – using their common sense and listening to advice.”

Darren Shattock, Group Health, Safety & Environmental Director at Redrow, said: “With the glorious weather we are currently experiencing, it’s unsurprising that people are keen to cool off. However, it’s vital that people only swim where it is safe to do so and with water close to many of our sites, it’s important that we take the time to share some key water safety guidelines.

“We take the safety of residents on our developments and of people in the surrounding communities very seriously so hopefully the messages of this campaign will stick in peoples’ minds, meaning they take precautions before jumping in and are able to enjoy water safely.”

Darren was recently appointed as Redrow’s new Group Health, Safety & Environmental Director, joining from independent engineering, IT and facilities services business NG Bailey.
