Exeter's Riverside Leisure Centre reopens

The pool and health suite at Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre has re-opened after a four-year closure.

Millions of pounds have been spent on refurbishing the building, following a fire in February 2017 which closed the entire facility for months.

The gym and sports halls were back in operation later that year, but whilst fire damage was being repaired, unrelated structural weaknesses were revealed.

Exeter City Council leader Phil Bialyk officially re-opened the pool and health suite at a short ceremony on Saturday and said it was “absolutely” worth the wait....

Council suggests Pinhoe moves into proposed new parliamentary constituency with Exmouth

Exeter councillors have recommended that Pinhoe be moved into a proposed new parliamentary constituency with Exmouth.

It follows proposals for a shake-up of England’s electoral map for general elections from 2023. The South West has been allocated an extra three seats, including one in Devon that also strays into parts of Somerset.

Under the Boundary Commission’s plan, which aims to make parliament fairer by giving each MP roughly a similar number of voters, a new Exmouth constituency would be created. Councillors at Wednesday night’s full council meeting proposed the...

Jenny and Milly keep volunteering in the family

Jenny Berryman and Milly Evans are already exceptional because they give up time to volunteer with Samaritans - but what makes them really special is that they are mother and daughter.

The pair are the first mother-and-daughter volunteers in the Exeter, Mid and East Devon branch of the charity, having joined the organisation during 2019.

Jenny, 46, says her biggest challenge was overcoming a worry of becoming too involved when listening to others’ problems. “However, the training we receive is exceptional - it gives us the confidence to listen without becoming an...

From a survey initiated by the holiday park operators Parkdean Resorts, Exeter is named the second friendliest city within the region of the UK. Within the top 50 cities mentioned, Edinburgh came in first place and swiftly after, came the city of Exeter. Coming in within the third and fourth positions, was the cities Oxford and Glasgow, and fifth being the city of Bournemouth.

These cities came to their positions due to it being primarily down to the sense of ‘community’ that was experienced there by holiday makers. Yet we can all agree that due to the challenging past year and a...

This summer, DAA are already being tasked to a higher number of missions...
