Businesses led by women were hit harder by COVID-19 than those led by men, according to a new study.

The study, published in The World Bank Research Observer , looked at the performances of 40,000 businesses in 49 countries between April and September 2020 using interviews and analysis from the World Bank’s Business Pulse Survey and Enterprise Survey programmes.

Now in its 47th year, International Women’s Day 2022 is taking place on Tuesday 8th March, promoting a world of gender equality and less discrimination. One industry that is still perceived as largely male-dominated is the construction sector. Pregnant women urged to have their vaccine as cases rise

Cases of COVID-19 are at their highest in Devon this month since the pandemic began, leading health experts to renew their calls urging pregnant women to have their vaccine.

Pregnant women with COVID-19 have a higher risk of intensive care admission , however research by the UK Obstetric Surveillance System found that no fully vaccinated pregnant women were admitted to intensive care with COVID-19 in England between February and the end of September last year. During the same time period at least 55,000 pregnant women had received one or more doses in the UK.

Reassurance for women on pregnancy, fertility and breastfeeding

The NHS in Devon is offering reassurance to women that they can have the Covid-19 vaccine while pregnant or breastfeeding and that it will not impact on their fertility.

Government advice states that:

Half UK workforce say women are underrepresented in senior management roles

Discrimination in the workplace is illegal in the UK under the Equality Act 2010, but a new survey suggests that UK employees believe there is still some way to go to improve equality in the workplace.

VBQ Speakers surveyed 1,000 UK adults who are currently employed in the UK to find out what they think about diversity in their workplace.

Half (50%) of those surveyed believed that women are under-represented in senior management roles. Women and men responded roughly the same to this question, with 51% and 47% respectively.

The role that women are playing in Devon’s fight against coronavirus (COVID-19) is being highlighted today, as part of International Women’s Day.

Women across the county are working in a range of roles supporting Devon’s vaccination programme at hospitals, GP-led sites, community teams, pharmacies, and care homes.

Exeter Rugby Club chief executive, Tony Rowe OBE, has today spoken of his delight after it was confirmed that the newly-formed Chiefs’ Women’s side have had their application to join the Tyrrells Premier 15s division for the 2020/21-2022/23 seasons accepted.

An independently verified audit took place in the first half of the 2019/20 season, where each current Tyrrells Premier 15s club was assessed based on a combination of their ability to deliver the competition’s Minimum Operating Standards and their on pitch performance.
