Food Poverty Project poised to win The People’s Millions

Local charity The Devon and Cornwall Food Association has been shortlisted as the potential recipient of up to £50,000 of People’s Millions Lottery Funding – an opportunity that will enable them to expand the vital work they do to redistribute in-date food that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

Their project, Devon and Cornwall Food Action, is one of two projects chosen for the South West region but your help is now sought to secure the funding.

Hospiscare is thrilled to have been nominated as one of the three charities to gain from Chelsea Building Society’s ‘Charity Choice’ Scheme. Members of Chelsea Building Society and the general public are able to visit the South Street, Exeter branch, until 8 November to vote for their favourite local charity to receive the Charitable Foundation’s support.

The charity which receives the most votes will receive a donation of £500, the second £300 and the third £200.

Bradshaw accuses Cameron of a 'terrible miscalculation' over Syria

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw has accused David Cameron, of an act of "terrible miscalculation" in his attempt to persuade MPs to support military action against Syria.

Mr Bradshaw said the action led to the Commons voting against Britain taking military action – by accident.

He said in his blog today: "It may be an outcome supported by a majority of the public, but it was not what any of the main parties or their leaders wanted."

Elections will take place on Thursday 2 May for nine seats in the Devon County Council divisions in Exeter and residents are being encouraged to ensure that they will be able to vote by being on the electoral register. After whittling down possible goals for the accolade, the shortlist is now open for votes to select Exeter City Football Club’s Goal of the Year 2012!

The goal that gets most votes will be put forward at the Football League Awards, and it’ll take on the best of the rest with the hope of winning the Mitre Goal of the Year 2012.

Church of England says no to female bishops

The Church of England's governing body on Tuesday narrowly blocked a move to permit women to serve as bishops, leaving the church facing more years of contentious debate.

Following a day-long debate, opponents mustered enough support to deny the necessary two-thirds majority among lay members of the General Synod.

The defeat was a setback for Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who retires at the end of December, and his successor, Bishop Justin Welby. Both had strongly endorsed a proposed compromise that they had hoped would end decades of debate....
