A CHARITY, which works to prevent young people becoming homeless, is urging the public to help it secure a funding grant. Community Housing Aid is in the running for a grant for its project, Nightstop Devon, which provides emergency accommodation for young people. Members of the public are being urged to go online and vote for Nightstop Devon, which is taking part in a campaign to receive a grant of up to £25,000 from the Masonic Charitable Foundation Community Award. Best Foot Forward is an ambitious county-wide dance project for older people.

The project is one of five competing in the West Country for £50k of National Lottery funding in the People’s Projects competition. Voting opened at 9am on Monday 20 March at www.thepeoplesprojects.org.uk .

With county council elections taking place in a few weeks, voters in Teignbridge are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote.

The call for voters to sign up comes as the Electoral Commission launches a national voter registration campaign to encourage as many people as possible to register ahead of elections taking place this year across the country.

Teignbridge is reminding voters that they need to register by the deadline of Thursday 13 April otherwise they won’t be able to take part in the Devon County Council elections on May 4.

Blundell's students put to the vote

Students at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, held their own referendum on Europe today (23 June).

During assembly in chapel, they heard two Year 12 politics and economics students put the case to Leave or Remain in the EU, under the watchful eyes of ‘Boris’, ‘Nigel’, ‘George’ and ‘David’.

After an informed hustings, students then voted at lunchtime via the choice of two buttons on a touchpad and the results were fed back to the IT department.

Remain campaign won, with 381 (58%) voting to stay in against 273 to leave.

Garden centre to transform outdoor space in Sidmouth

Over the coming weeks, Sidmouth, a Wyevale Garden Centre, will be giving something back to the local community by transforming the outdoor space of a Sidmouth organisation, as voted by the public. There's still time to register to vote for this year's elections.

People have until 18 April to ensure they are on the electoral register. Failure to do so will mean they will not be able to vote.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is in need of your vote this week as the charity has been shortlisted to win a pot of funding to pay for its project: ‘Time to Play’.

Residents of East Devon are reminded that there’s just under a week left to ensure you have registered as an elector and can vote on 7 May. The last day for receipt of applications is Monday 20 April.

If you are already registered, but want to have a postal vote rather than going to a polling station on election day, time is also running out. You must apply by 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday 21 April to ensure you can vote by post.
