Archaeologists unearth most south-westerly Roman town at Okehampton development

Local archaeologists working with Redrow Homes believe they have discovered the most south-westerly Roman town in Britain at the housebuilder’s Romansfield development in Okehampton, Devon.

Locally based independent commercial archaeological consultancy AC archaeology has found the foundation trenches and post-holes of some 25 timber-constructed buildings situated either side of a well-preserved Roman road extending eastwards from a military fort.

Pupils at Cranbrook Education Campus are relishing new books for their library, provided through Cranbrook’s Healthy Town scheme which is funded by NHS England’s Healthy New Town programme.

The thirty seven new arrivals for secondary school aged children, valued around £240, cover the Reading Well Mood-Boosting Book lists chosen by and for young people. The Reading Well Mood-Boosting Books scheme, run by the Reading Agency, is described as a national promotion of uplifting titles, including novels, poetry and non-fiction.

Councils meet to discuss future of Port Royal

Since the beginning of the year, informal discussions have been held between Sidmouth Town Council (STC) and East Devon District Council (EDDC) on carrying out a scoping exercise as the first stage in the process of development and renewal of Sidmouth’s Port Royal and Eastern Town. Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! Stephen Cunliffe from Dawlish is competing in the Bermuda International Town Crier Competition 2015 next week.

Cranbrook’s first town council elected

Cranbrook’s first ever town council members have been elected.

There are 12 vacancies on the new body that will be set up to manage local governance for the new community.

Nine people stepped forward for the seats on the new town council and so all nine are duly elected uncontested.

The new council is quorate (it has enough members to carry out its duties) but there will be an opportunity to co-opt three more members in the future.

New chapter for Tiverton youth centre
