Brand new Food Festival for Devon’s English Riviera

To kick off the first May Bank Holiday 2013 the famous seaside resort of Torquay in South Devon will be holding TorqEat, a brand-new FREE Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 4 May.

The event, organised by Torquay BID and supported by Taste of the West, will be located on the vibrant Torquay harbourside and fan out over beautiful Cary Gardens.

Visitors will be able to try and buy from over 35 producers all showcasing a delicious mix of food and drink products from across the English Riviera and the West Country.

Police seek 43-year-old wanted man known to frequent Exeter and Torquay

Story update 20 May: Stephen Gill was arrested in Exeter on 15 May and returned to prison.

First reported 24 April: Police in Devon are seeking a 43-year-old man who has breached the terms of his release licence from Prison. Stephen Gill failed to comply with the conditions and is being sought by officers. PCSO shot by BB gun in Torquay

A 24-year-old man from Braddons Hill Road East, Torquay, is due to appear before Magistrates in Torquay this morning following an incident involving an imitation firearm. Mark Cook was arrested at lunchtime on Monday 15 April 2013 after a Police Community Support Officer was hit by a ball bearing fired from a gun. Officers attended an address in the road and made the arrest a short time later. The suspect was then interviewed before being charged with being in possession of a BB gun and kept in custody pending his court appearance this morning (Tuesday 16 April 2013).

Officers investigate serious collision in Torquay

Police are appealing for witnesses to a single-vehicle collision in Torquay, which left a man seriously injured. A Citroen Saxo was in collision with a stone gatepost on Lower Warberry Road at 12.35am on Saturday (6 April). The driver, who was the only person in the car, sustained serious chest and spinal injuries and was taken to Torbay Hospital. The 47-year-old man from Torquay was later transferred to Derriford Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. A Devon zoo and aquarium has had an unusual spring birth – two baby stingrays.

The bluespotted ribbontail rays - one male and one female - were born on Sunday 17 March at Living Coasts, in Torquay.

Man arrested on suspicion of murder in Torquay

A 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in Torquay. Police were called to a property in Shelley Avenue at 6.40am today (6 March) and discovered the body of a 54-year-old woman. The man has been taken to Torbay District Hospital but remains in police custody.

A police investigation is underway and scenes of crime officers are conducting an examination of the property today. The cause of death has yet to be established and next of kin have not yet been informed.

Police appeal for help following spate of shoplifting offences in Devon

Police are appealing to the public for help following a string of shoplifting offences in Devon. The four offences, which police believe involve the same men, occurred on the same day, 1 February, at shops in Exmouth, Teignmouth, Paignton and Torquay. At the Co-op in Dartmouth Road, Paignton at noon two men entered the rear of the store and stole 27 cases of cigarettes, cigars and tobacco products and four cases of chewing gum, total value in excess of £2,000. Torquay road closures after suspect device found

Police in Torquay have closed off a section of the town following concerns from officers who attended an address there earlier.

Police have set up a 100 metre cordon in the area of Falloway Close as a precaution following the discovery of an unexplained device in the garden of a property.

The cordon includes Happaway Road and extends as far as, but not including Barton Road.

The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called to the property to assess the situation.

The octopus has topped a poll of favourite species at Living Coasts.

Staff and volunteers voted for their Living Coasts top ten - and the results make interesting reading. Alongside the obvious crowd pleasers like the penguins and seals, staff have highlighted the variety of unusual species at Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium.

Spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “It might surprise people who think Living Coasts is just about birds, because the top ten is made up of four marine species, three bird species, two mammals and a reptile!”
