The enthusiasm for sport generated by the Olympics and Paralympics is still going strong months after the closing ceremony, according to new research published today (Friday, 8 March).

A survey by the Local Government Association (LGA) found three-quarters of councils have seen an increase in people accessing their sports facilities or activities, with one-third reporting a rise in people with a disability getting involved. These latest figures are even higher than during the Olympics themselves, when a similar survey found 44 per cent of councils had an increase.

Chiefs are on the rise, says Welch

Damian Welch believes the Exeter Chiefs are making significant steps in the right direction after recording back-to-back Aviva Premiership victories.

The imposing lock, who was signed last summer from the Scarlets, claimed his maiden score for the club in the recent 47-16 home win over London Welsh - and then followed suit last Saturday as he claimed Exeter's opening try in their 27-16 win away to reigning champions Harlequins.

Now, Welch is hoping the Devon club can maintain their improvement in form when they welcome third-placed Leicester Tigers to Sandy Park later this...

Tough talking pays dividends says Chiefs' Jack Yeandle

Jack Yeandle admitted some tough internal talking helped to get the Exeter Chiefs back to winning ways with victory over London Welsh in the Aviva Premiership on Saturday.

Without a win in their five previous top flight fixtures, the Chiefs responded in fine fashion as they ran in five tries during a dominant 47-16 display against the Exiles at Sandy Park.

Making his first Premiership start for the Devon club since his switch from Championships side Doncaster Knights last summer, Yeandle helped play a key role in that success story as he claimed Exeter's opening try when he...

Baxter hopes return to home ground will provide perfect pick-me-up

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter hopes a return to home surroundings will provide the perfect pick-me-up to get his ailing side back on track in the Aviva Premiership.

With just one league defeat at Sandy Park this season - that came against Northampton Saints back in early January - the Chiefs welcome Premiership newcomers to London Welsh to Devon tomorrow (3pm).

Like the Chiefs, the visitors have also been experiencing some tough times of late and last weekend's narrow home defeat to Sale Sharks has pulled Lyn Jones' team into the division's relegation fight.

Friend hat-trick helps Dawlish cruise to victory

DAWLISH UNITED 4-1 CHAGFORD

Three goals from Ben Friend helped Dawlish United cruise to victory in the Devon & Exeter League 2nd Division, keeping first place in close sight.

In a first half in which the hosts forced no less than ten corners, it came as no surprise when Kristain Rabbage capitalised to net his side in front after 22 minutes, shortly after himself and Isaac Reed had shots saved.

As more pressure mounted on the visitors in the seaside sun, Dawlish doubled their lead when Friend headed in from a free-kick in the 39th minute - his first of the...
