On average we spend around 24 years of our lives asleep. With that amount of time spent tucked up in bed you could be forgiven for thinking that choosing a mattress to sleep on could be a tedious and careful selection process.

Though a recent survey has revealed that the people of Exeter would rather put more time into considering what clothes they want to wear from the high street or where to top up their tans on their summer holiday.

Online mattress company Leesa conducted an independent study, which found that 36% of people think picking a destination of where to sleep...

Wound up before sleep?

We all find it hard to wind down sometimes, making it difficult for us to fall asleep. Thankfully, YouTube and other online sources, such as The Dozy Owl , have become a vast library for the non-sleepers, full of audios that might help us to relax. And, if we can relax better, the physiological response from our bodies is more conducive to sleep such as a slowing heart rate and a lower temperature.

What helps you to relax? Is it the sound of rain on your window, the sounds of a fire roaring, or is it someone taking you through a relaxing sensory scene such as a forest or a beach?...

Sleeping study volunteers wanted

A Masters student working through the South West Doctoral Training Centre is currently researching the experiences of community-dwelling over 65s, who have taken or are currently taking some form of sleeping medication.

What is the purpose of the study?

The long-term use of sleep medication by older adults can be extremely harmful to health. However, prescription rates remain very high; hypnotic drugs remain the most popular treatment offered by those aged over 65 by GPs. For this to change, and for any intervention to be successful, it is important that the voices of those...

The Sleep Environment: Bedding

How important is it to maintain an appropriate sleeping environment (your bedroom)?

Do we really need to give it much thought?

Don’t we just get tired and pass out?

If you think like this then good for you- it sounds like your sleep is great! But is it? It’s not uncommon for us to wake up feeling unrefreshed, or like we could do with a few more hours sleep despite seemingly sleeping soundly all night.

These feelings can affect our days, and feelings of sleepiness/lack of concentration can interfere at the most inappropriate of times - like in a meeting or...
