On average we spend around 24 years of our lives asleep. With that amount of time spent tucked up in bed you could be forgiven for thinking that choosing a mattress to sleep on could be a tedious and careful selection process.

Though a recent survey has revealed that the people of Exeter would rather put more time into considering what clothes they want to wear from the high street or where to top up their tans on their summer holiday.

Online mattress company Leesa conducted an independent study, which found that 36% of people think picking a destination of where to sleep for a week on holiday is more important than choosing a mattress to rest their heads on for the other 51 weeks of the year.

Over a third (32%) of people also admitted that they spend more time picking out new clothes rather than searching for a new mattress. It also revealed that over a fifth of people think picking a new TV or other appliance is likewise more important than finding a comfortable sleeping spot.

With people preferring to spend their time and money on products which provide more excitement, the most shocking statistic could be the fact that just 14% of people consider purchasing their new mattress as one of the top three things they put most thought into buying.

Co-founder of the Leesa Jamie Diamonstein commented on the rather concerning findings from the survey, he said: “A mattress is a very personal product and its suitability can change over time.

“The survey results confirm our belief that many people don’t get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis, nor do they put enough thought into their mattresses.”

With the subject of sleep quality seemingly an ever-growing concern amongst the population it is important to know that those who do not sleep enough put themselves at serious health risk, with the chances of developing heart disease, diabetes as well as mental health issues increasing.

The general recommended amount of sleep is around 7-8 hours per night, though this can vary dependent on the individual. The general rule is, according to the NHS, if you wake up tired and spend the day desperate for a kip, then you most likely are sleep deprived.
