It is sad to note that as we may enjoy the sights and sounds of Spring around us, our natural history is in serious trouble. That is the conclusion of the recent State of Nature report published by a coalition of leading British conservation and research organisations.

Scientists working side-by-side from 25 wildlife organisations have compiled a stock take of our native species – the first of its kind in the UK. The report reveals that 60% of the species studied have declined over recent decades. More than one in ten of all the species assessed are under threat of disappearing...

Diocese tweets the Passion

The Diocese of Exeter has been tweeting the whole passion story, from Palm Sunday, and will continue until sunrise on Easter Sunday. The story has been rewritten for tweeting in the first person and from Jesus’s perspective and will be sent out in ‘real time’ throughout Holy Week. Canon Andrew Godsall said: “The idea with tweeting the passion is to help people relate to a familiar story in a contemporary way. Jesus used contemporary phrases all of the time. He wanted to make people sit up and listen so he used provocative words. Sometimes people got the wrong end of the stick – and maybe...

'Long live the Pope' resounds in St Peter's Square before inauguration Mass for Pope Francis

The inauguration Mass for Pope Francis is currently under way in St Peter's Square in Rome before tens of thousands of people, including 132 world leaders, marking the official start of his papacy.

Francis, who was elected by a conclave of cardinals last week to take over from Benedict XVI, took a tour of the square earlier this morning in an open-topped vehicle. Shouts of 'Long live the Pope' resounded from the crowds and Pope Francis stopped frequently to greet the crowd and kiss babies held up to him. He got out of the vehicle at one point to bless a disabled man. Communion will...

Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina elected as new Roman Catholic pontiff

David Cameron has welcomed the election Jorge Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, as the new Pope, saying it is a "momentous day" for Catholics around the world.

Cardinal Bergoglio, who will be known as Pope Francis I, was elected pontiff on the fifth ballot today (Wednesday 13 March) following the papal conclave in Rome.

Addressing the crowds, the first non-European pontiff for more than a millenium said: "As you know, the duty of the conclave was to appoint a bishop of Rome. It seems to me that my brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am...

Pope Benedict XVI bids farewell in last public appearance

More than 50,000 people are expected to gather in St Peter's Square later today for Pope Benedict XVI's final general audience the day before he becomes the first pontiff in 600 years to step down since Pope Gregory XII abdicated in 1415.

Papal audiences are normally held inside a Vatican hall in the winter, however there has been such a lot of interest that the event is being held outdoors. 50,000 tickets have been requested, but as many as 200,000 people may attend and people have even been seen running in order to get a prime spot for this unprecedented event.

The Pope...
